This is an editable Google spreadsheet of higher ed sites currently using Drupal. Please help by adding your college or university site with a few details about your installation(s):

The read-only version of the spreadsheet is here (plain HTML without Google Docs):

Big List of Domains
I have a Big list of about 1000 Domains that are classified as Education gathered from builtwith.com Not all of them are Higher Ed .edu Domains. I'm going to add a New Tab and load the data in. I think it can accelerate the process of gathering info on all these institutions.
I will break this Data Set into two tabs. .edu and non .edu.
I'm going to remove all the Contact info and only provide the basics:
Domain
Traffic Data
Web Host
Server Type
Wonderful addition!
Thank you for the new sheet of builtwith.com data, Taylor.

Your Welcome its my pleasure. The Drupal community is Strong!
Jonathan,
I don't have a problem sharing with you some of the public contact info privately if you would like to reach out to individual Institutions. Did not want to post Emails and Phone numbers online.

Update Status
Drupal already records some statistics of module use through the "Update Status" module. Wouldn't it be easier to check what kind of data they gather (such as reporting domain) and then do an analysis on that data, instead of trying to manually collect information?
This data would potentially give a lot more insight. Instead of only knowing which site uses Drupal, it could help identify which modules are most popular in Higher Education.
Maybe we should even suggest an addition to the Drupal core, similarly to what Google Analytics does. When a user creates a site, it could ask some very basic questions (all optionally):
- What industry is this site serving (options for Automotive, Marketing & Sales, Higher Ed etc.)?
- Stand alone or Multi-site?
- Developed by (options for in-house, external contractor etc.)
- Privacy checkbox (I agree that this data plus domain name, Drupal version, modules in use is shared with the Drupal Association for statistical analysis etc.)
Obviously, this would have to be thought through carefully to make sure that it can be unobtrusive and secure.

Long Term Strategy
Jelo,
Thats a great idea, however it seems like it might take a significant amount of time, as well as effort to get all these Universities to comply. Take a look at the list I will post. There are at least 1000 institutions using Drupal per Builtwith.com and many of these, have thousands of departments running separate sites.
There might be some privacy concerns as well.
Spirit of this list is voluntary sharing
If devs, admins or designers at a college or university wish to volunteer any data (core version, multi-site vs. single, FTE) then I don't see an issue. No need to get all NSA with backend data -- only publishing what can be seen in the publicly-served source code (that builtwith.com can see) or additional info that is volunteered.
At SUNY Fredonia, we're looking for solid evidence about the scale and depth of the Drupal marketplace to extrapolate an informed guess about its long-term viability as we consider making a greater investment in Drupal to become our primary campus CMS. That Google Spreadsheet with the fresh builtwith.com data from Taylor seems to make a compelling case for Drupal.
Thank you to Jay Collier and everyone who contributed to this spreadsheet.

Is it too late to add a "site details" form into Drupal 8 core?
Is it too late to ask someone in D8 core dev about adding the "site details" form into the base config?
As Jens suggests, this could help the Drupal Association gain a lot more insight into how the platform is being used.

Great idea.
Totally a great idea. Guessing the list of Universities that use Drupal will be pretty long.
Very Helpful
This is some very helpful information. Thanks so much!
