Monthly Semi-formal Meetup

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hey Nashville Drupal peeps! I wanted to check the pulse on starting a more formal monthly meetup around a topic (similar to what we did a few years back and like this: http://www.meetup.com/nashvillerails/). I don't want it to interfere with the weekly ones at J.J.'s so what night would you guys prefer besides Thursdays? I am open to whatever weeknight the majority prefers.

In terms of logistics, I can help make sure we have a presenter/topic lined up and keeping scheduling/communication going. Also, my employer Centresource (Germantown), has just expanded office space and now has an even better area for this kind of thing so I can probably book that regularly if need be. That said, I have no desire to co-opt this meetup under the banner of any single organization, so I'm also up for jumping around venues if that works better for everybody.

This was inspired by conversations this past weekend at DrupalCamp Chattanooga where I (re)realized the quantity/quality of work being done with Drupal in Nashville. Let's come together to share this knowledge and be a great place for beginners to tap in!

I just noticed in the Nashville area page intro it mentioned this might be in process. I don't want to step on toes either, so if you want to combine efforts, I'll just be glad to help!

I'd love to see something

jphelan's picture

I'd love to see something like this started. Is the J.J.'s weekly thing still going? I've not seen any posts on it in a couple months.

Nice!

evanmwillhite's picture

Awesome, glad to hear it @jphelan. You have a preference on what evening?

Not sure on the weekly meetups, I've admittedly been terrible about attending those for awhile. I just pinged @bryrock about this monthly one though - he'd be the best one to ask.

Any week night other than

jphelan's picture

Any week night other than Wed. I live down in Columbia but would for sure be willing to make the drive up to Nashville once a month.

Happy to present

mr_scumbag's picture

I'd be happy to come up from Chattanooga and present every now and again if Nashville gets a regular meetup.

Evan, I find the biggest problem to keeping meetings going is not having a regular location and time.
If your employer will let you use an office, make sure that it becomes the default space. Also hold it at the same time each month - e.g. 2nd Tuesday each month at 6.30pm.
And always have a session planned in advance. People like to know what they are coming for. It will keep attendance higher.

I post on groups.drupal.org, and also use meetup.com
meetup.com costs money ($70 per 6 months), but lots of people use meetup.com and it will help your attendance. I simply eat the cost of it.

Get yourself added as an admin to this group too. Bryan or Jamie will do it :D

Go Nashville Drupalers !

Just did

Just made Evan an admin. ;)

Perfect!

evanmwillhite's picture

Great advice, Lee, and thanks for offering to present - that would be awesome. Centresource has volunteered their space, so I think we'd just need to figure out a consistent date that works for everybody. I checked our event calendar here, and it looks like Tuesdays are free game.

What does everybody think about the 1st Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm?

As for sessions, that's the part I definitely don't mind organizing. We have done something internal like this for awhile at Centresource, so we have a lot of content to fall back on there if it's hard to find volunteers some months.

2nd Tuesday, perhaps?

1kenthomas's picture

Note that Atlanta Drupallers schedule events on 2nd Thursday, final Tuesday in general.

Do other people have conflicts? I'll pipe back in once I have a better sense of my commuting schedule for early next year.

Ok, thanks Ken - good to know

Interested

Hi, I've been lurking around here for a while. I'm going to be moving to Nashville soon, so I would be interested in making it to monthly meetings.

"Do, or do not. There is no try."

Glad to have you!

I'm glad to hear it, Evan.

bryrock's picture

I'm glad to hear it, Evan. Not stepping on my toes, etc. More people is what it's going to take to breath life back into ND. I'm cc'ing Matt Smith via email. He's also been working a lot to help get this going again. But three is company and we need a crowd!

Thanks Bryan!

evanmwillhite's picture

Great to hear, and Matt, please feel free to chime in if I've missed anything you were wanting to include here.

So any quibbles with the 1st Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm with the default location being the Centresource office?

Also below is a list of topic ideas I can cover on my end in case anybody wants to put in a vote for any of those to kick us off. Also, please please feel free to offer your own as well. Definitely want everyone's input here.

  1. Writing custom Context conditions
  2. Search API and Apache Solr
  3. Drupal 7 front-end performance
  4. Lightweight, lovely mapping with Leaflet
  5. Intro to and/or programming custom Rules

Would totally love to be in

timaholt's picture

Would totally love to be in on this! I think that time/location makes sense to me.

I've up for talking about any of these things:

  1. Deploy and UUID
  2. WF Tools and coordinated deployments
  3. Drush make and Drupal 7 custom distros
  4. Jenkins/CI

**EDIT
I realize I won't be able to make the first one in December... so count me in for January!

This is Great

mattsmith3's picture

I'll have to think about what I can present... but I'm sure a meetup will help inspire a few ideas. Glad we have a default location and time!

Tim, no worries on December

evanmwillhite's picture

Tim, no worries on December and I'm game for any/all those session ideas myself.

I'll go ahead and tentatively schedule the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm on the books at the office - we can always change that if we get enough push-back on that date/time.

Also, I'll set myself a reminder for next week when we've given everybody a chance to respond to this to announce the first meetup and topic. If you can, chime in if you have a preference on that topic from what has been listed already (or add your own) and also start spreading the word in general that these will be picking back up.

Cheers!

Coming back to the Drupalers group after a long absence

CRasH180's picture

After running the Nashville Linux Users Group for two years, I can attest to having a regular meeting spot and time helping with attendance and viability of a group. Strong leadership, presentations, and community support also helps as well.

Saying that, I am coming back to Drupal and want to start a career using Drupal. I would like to attend regular meetings and helping out where possible.

For medical reasons I cannot drive for another five months. However, I will do what I can to attend live sessions with enough advance notice.

Thank you,

Kevin Eldridge

Great to hear, Kevin

We welcome you and your expertise in running a user group. ;)

As for coming back to Drupal... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPw-3e_pzqU

But seriously though, welcome!

Last Chance for December Topic

evanmwillhite's picture

Hey guys, last chance to put in a vote for the first monthly meetup (December 3, 6:30pm) topic:

Below are the current options (minus Tim's who will be out of town):

  1. Writing custom Context conditions
  2. Search API and Apache Solr
  3. Drupal 7 front-end performance
  4. Lightweight, lovely mapping with Leaflet
  5. Intro to and/or programming custom Rules
  6. YOUR TOPIC HERE (do you want to discuss something different?)

We'll announce a topic choice tomorrow, so we'd love your input!

I vote #1, but am open to

bryrock's picture

I vote #1, but am open to anything. Would mainly like to see a lot of happy shining people show up at a Drupaler meeting.

It's official!

evanmwillhite's picture

Tuesday December 3 - 6:30pm at Centresource.

Who's excited? :) We'll be discussing writing custom Context conditions (and whatever else people want to talk about) and just enjoying some good, clean-ish Drupal fun.

Everybody spread the word far and wide!

Hey guys!

I used to attend meetups at JJ's Market off of Brodway over a year ago.

Are the Nashville meetups still happening? If so, when, where, and how often?

Thanks!

2015 Meetings

I am trying to learn Drupal and would welcome a meeting where I could ask a few questions and learn more about Drupal -- particularly Drupal 8.

Drupal Group in 2015

rudy.barrett's picture

Hi snipebin and jimfuqua, The Drupal user's group in Nashville hasn't met for a few months and is currently in a transition period. We are trying to revitalize the group in the coming months and we will post updates here as plans of action are laid down.

Thanks for your interest, we hope to have meetings scheduled soon with presentations, code sprints, and general information swapping.

Thanks for the update, please

snipebin's picture

Thanks for the update, please let me know when you guys would like to meet again. The sooner the better!

Maybe we could just.. start?

snipebin's picture

Hey guys,

I was just thinking that we could start going to JJ's market on broadway every last Thursday of the month or something. We can organize the group on meetup.

In the next few weeks i'm going to be contacting Drupal companies in Nashville to develop partnerships and I want to take the opportunity socialize a regular meet up in Nashville.

What do you guys think?

Maybe we could just.. start?

if someone(s) stepped up and took on some leadership. I think last Thursday does not conflict with any of the other groups I schedule for, but we might want to check (Nashjs, PHP etc as well as Chat/Atlanta etc if any are going to those.

Drupal companies in Nashville? But yes, support-- also, I think I met someone from MediaCurrrent at last months' Orlando group, who was moving to the area-- remind me to follow-up with him.

D8 presentation, anyone?

Meetings

jimfuqua's picture

I would like to see meetings that focused on content. Drupal 8 is probably not more than three or four months away from a release. I know nothing about it and would like to know more.

Am not familiar with JJ's Market, but it sounds like a busy place where a social meeting could occur, but not detailed presentations with audio and video.

It appears that the change to Drupal 8 will be profound and that a lot of knowledge will become quickly obsolete. Maybe not. I certainly don't know and would like to know.

H5P

jimfuqua's picture

Anyone in Nashville area using H5P on Drupal? http://h5p.org/

H5P is the primary reason I am interested in Drupal. H5P could revolutionize open-source computer based education.

H5P only works on Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress. Of the three Drupal seems to be the most promising. I have learned a bit about Drupal 7 but, with Drupal 8 being a total rewrite am hesitant to spend more time learning what is likely to be soon obsolete except for legacy system maintenance.

Would like to know more about Drupal 8 and how well it could manage tens of thousands of students simultaneously using H5P based educational content and the resulting big data.

Does anyone know or have opinions?
