Date: Monday, June 2, 2014
Time: 9am-4pm
Venue: University of Texas at Austin
Cost: Free

Who Should Attend?

Anyone interested in discussing the needs and issues specific to using Drupal in educational environments. All are welcome, although we will be focusing primarily on higher ed and k-12 education. Those not currently using Drupal, but considering it, are also welcome. We encourage participants of all skill levels from beginner through expert, in a variety of roles -- site builder, developer, themer, project manager, support specialist, etc. You do not need to be registered for DrupalCon Austin in order to attend this event. We look forward to seeing you!

Presentation Formats

  • "Regular" presentation: Usually 1-2 presenters. 30 mins, including ample time for questions/discussion
  • Panel presentation: 45 mins
  • BoF ("birds of a feather") discussion topic: 30 mins, no presentation planned in advance

Topic Gathering

This page is divided into two sections:

  • Topic Proposals: Topics on which you would like to present (presentation or panel), or organize a BoF.
  • Topic Requests: Topics on which you would like *someone else* to present. (e.g., something new to you that you would like to learn more about; a challenge you're facing that you would like to hear how others have approached, etc.)

If you would like to present, but don't have a specific topic in mind, browse the "topic requests" and consider volunteering to speak about about one of the topics listed there.

Please edit this wiki page to add your topic ideas, below.

Topic Proposals

Please include a description of your topic, as well as your preferred presentation format (presentation, panel, BoF), intended audience and/or Drupal experience level of your presentation, your name, and your school/college/university/organization.

  • I've presented "Drupal. @uchicago, .edu" a few times before and would be happy to do it again if folks are interested. Basically, it's an overview of how we're using Drupal on campus across a number of disparate departments and divisions. Any takers? -froboy
  • Features-based development - We're using Features pretty heavily when developing sites, but we're also maintaining our own UC Davis distribution which we're using through our Pantheon One plan. We had some good discussions about Features at the Higher-Ed Summit at BADCamp, and I'd like to continue that discussion here. This could be a BoF, or I could present on what we're doing at UC Davis. - Shawn DeArmond
    • I'm also using features for rolling out config for some projects at Babson College. So, it sounds interesting. - Jamie Fallon
  • Google Code-In and Summer of Code (GCI and GSoC) - GCI=High School students and GSoC = University students. Did you know Drupal has an initiative twice each year to mentor students contributing to our community in a variety of projects/tasks? Did you know many of Drupal's top contributors started in GCI/GSoC? It is only natural GCI/GSoC is mentioned at a Drupal/Education summit. Does your educational organization promote/participate in GCI/GSoC from a student or mentoring point of view? Google does a great job of advertising to students, but organizations are still encouraged to promote to all technology/CS programs for potential students. Drupal's biggest struggle each year is finding dedicated mentors and projects for students to work on. To Keep GCI/GSoC moving forward with fresh ideas we built a team to participate in these types of gatherings to spread the word about our initiative. Plus I'm sure many of these education related projects would love free help! - Matthew Lechleider aka Slurpee
  • BOF-Course Listing/Class Track: How to set up relational data? I can show some work in progress. Is anyone else interested in discussing?- Jamie Fallon
    • I'd love to hear more about this, as it's something we'll be remodeling very soon. - David Watson
  • Undine: Dev Environments Made Easy: I'd be happy to present on the work Stevens Institute of Technology is doing on Undine, a multi-platform turnkey dev environment for Drupal. Topics include the challenges of developing for education that motivated Undine's development, how it works under the hood (Vagrant and Puppet) and how it can be used in your own projects. - David Watson
  • Anything Related to elmsln - I'll be talking about the ELMSLN design methodology as a whole and showcasing it working in Vagrant at DrupalCon but this project encompasses multiple networked distributions talking together. Possible topics that could be drawn from this based on interest: Addressing accessibility, Galaxy packaging format, Vagrant, RestWS based webservices, LTI, DSLM, Rapid distribution development and management, Rubric module, building and managing the PSU Drupal community, really anything in the Drupal in Edu / ELMSLN world I'd be happy to share. -- btopro

Topic Requests

Please list any topics that you would like to learn more about (but don't feel comfortable presenting on just yet). This might be a particular topic that is new to you that you would like to learn more about; a challenge you're facing that you would like to hear how others have approached, etc. You do not need to include your name here -- just your requested discussion topic.

  • I'm very interested in using Drupal to manage learning content, to create and manage reusable learning objects. I'm working on a Drupal learning content management system that includes authoring and publishing components, with the ability to publish to multiple platforms from a single database. And in publishing SCORM content. Is anyone else interested in this topic? -- tewnet
  • Does anyone use the Quiz module?- Jamie Fallon
  • Digital Asset Management (DAM). Does anyone have experience with building a DAM in Drupal, or integrating an external DAM solution into a Drupal site?
  • Distributions. How do you create/manage Drupal distributions on your campus?
  • Campus maps using Drupal.
  • Finding modules that can help educators. Better ways of organizing the module pool for education.
  • Strategies on how to build a community of developers and users around modules for education (I have a background in language education)

Hey all,

I've moved the contents of this wiki page over to the website for the event: http://drupaledsummit.org .

Those of you who proposed or suggested topics: You can find your topic under "Proposed topics." If you create an account on that site, I'll make you the author of your topic's node so you can edit it if you like.

Topics and presentations can be proposed over at the new site, too.

And everyone --please register for the event! It's free, but you'll need to register so we know how many people to expect.

See you in June!
