Spaces with Members from Groups Become Children?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I created a Private, top-level Space (no parents) and I created a Group. I assigned the group to the space so that members of the Group would have access to the Space. When I view the Space via the Edit button, I see that the Space is now a Child of the Group?

What's happening here and how does this affect permissions that I've set?

Does anyone know how I need to set up both the Group and the Space so that Space permissions override group permissions?

Thanks,
~Dogtag

I would also like to know this...

I created a Group and a top-level Space. I added the Group as inherited to the space, but when I check the Members of the space, under inheritance it is showing "Inheritance disabled".

Do I really need to manually add users to each space? That seems rather convoluted, I'd rather just place all employees into a group based on their department or role and then just add those groups to the spaces they need to be in.

More info needed.

What do you have selected under "Group User Inheritance" on the parent space?

You shouldn't need to add all

You shouldn't need to add all the members again. We have a number of 'Groups' with staff members in. And our spaces are set to be 'children' of these groups. This way, with user inheritance turned on the groups, all the right users have access to the spaces that are 'children' of their group.

Is it accurate that notification settings aren't inherited using this approach?

Unfortunately yes, but there

Unfortunately yes, but there is work on that issue here: https://www.drupal.org/node/2194169
