We've deployed Solr for Drupal in a few different scenarios. Some examples:

I'll be giving a talk about Solr and Drupal at Drupal Open Days in Dublin next weekend. The session will be aimed at intermediate to advanced users and use cases. My example site will be using about 70,000 nodes in the index.
