Let’s create a rock solid frontend by controlling Drupal div’s and implementing a modular CSS philosophy! Whether we work on large or small projects, in a team or by ourselves, many of us have encountered this moment: “I am making a CSS update to .views-row. What am I going to break?” To be successful, we either rely on having a strong understanding of the entire code base (hard if you work in a team and even harder if you work by yourself and have a terrible memory) or creating long strings of nested div’s to ensure specific targeting (which usually results in inefficiently duplicating code to use these styles in other specifically targeted regions).

Using a Modular CSS philosophy like SMACSS or AtomicCSS helps with this dilemma but effectively implementing on a Drupal site becomes easier when you can customize what HTML is rendered. While modular CSS has been a big discussion in the frontend developer community, we are probably going to see this cross over into the Drupal community with SMACSS being adopted for Drupal 8 core development.

Let’s talk about:

  • What is Modular CSS and how it can be helpful.
  • Ways you are probably already using this philosophy (whether you know it or not).
  • What modules let you manipulate how Drupal outputs div’s.
  • How you can use templates that let you manipulate how Drupal outputs div’s.
  • SASS/CSS file structure and organization.
  • Tools like SASS-globbing for better hierarchical file and folder structures.

This session will involve collaborative conversation and hope others will join in and share their tips & tricks and/or trials & tribulations.

This month's meetup is presented by:

Leah Wagner is a front end developer at The Jibe.

Social

Please join us for drinks and food at Steamworks Brewery. This is a great opportunity to meet other Drupalers in the area and network.

Lightning Talks

Attendees are invited to share their experience by giving a 2 to 4 minute presentation on any topic of interest to the Drupal community. If you want to use a laptop to show a website or control panel please be sure you have the necessary cable (vga) to connect to an overhead projector.
