FosterClub is a non-profit organization with the mission to lead the efforts of young people in and from foster care to become connected, educated, inspired and represented so they can realize their personal potential and contribute to a better life for their peers. As the national network for youth in foster care, FosterClub is piloting a web developer internship for youth who have experienced foster care. Foster youth face unique challenges in obtaining higher education; support programs for youth in college are leading to increased degree attainment, but entry into high-paying STEM careers is lacking. While much research has focused on educational barriers faced by foster youth, we have less understanding of how foster youth make career choices and form their professional identities, and how we might lead young people in pursuing STEM careers, particularly in Web Development.
Seeking:
Professional Web developers experienced in the Drupal platform willing to volunteer and mentor two young people interning at FosterClub from February to May 2015.
Description:
Mentors would be asked to complete a criminal background check (provided by FosterClub).
Position would include the following:
Participate in industry interviews - interns will interview mentors regarding their education and experience in the field.
Serve as project reviewers, providing feedback at all stages of project.
Provide technical assistance as available
Expected time commitment: 3-5 hours per month.
