Drupal As a Dashboard / Aggregator / Portal?

I thought I read an article once about Drupal being used as a one-stop-dashboard for multiple systems of other data, like an aggregator or portal to other information. Anyone hear of anything like this?

I know we can use the Aggregator and Feeds modules to pull in data from other sites, and I have used several of the Feeds* modules on one project previously and have an idea of what I would do if I went that route.

But I am curious if there are other examples or ideas out there for efficiently minimizing large quantities of metrics from a half dozen or so different systems, into one common interface, with Drupal.
