[Meta] Mentor Meeting - Saturday, 4 June, 2016 at UTC 20:30 in Google Hangout.

To find the meeting ping YesCT or another mentor in #drupal-mentoring channel in IRC. See https://www.drupal.org/core-mentoring for the calendar.

Mentor Meta meetings are once a month, usually on the first Saturday of the month, at UTC 20:30. These are mentor meetings about mentoring (hence the "meta"), about upcoming events and ongoing Drupal core mentoring efforts.

Do you want to get involved doing mentoring but not sure what to do? Want to help Drupal mentoring be successful? Join us. All help is welcome:

  • people who can help organize us
  • developers to help us with Drupal.org issues that will effect contributor or mentor experience
  • planners to help with events
  • people with different skills who are interested

Share what mentoring successes and challenges you have had.

Attendees

  • Alina (alimac)
  • Chris (cilefen)
  • Lucas (heddn)
  • David (davidhernandez)

Mentor Business

  • Mentorbot management
    • Alimac hosts it now.
    • It would be great if the mentorbot repo got periodically updated with its database content.

New Orleans Retrospective

  • Mentor survey results
    • 16 responses
    • Overall experience: Excellent (88%) or Good (12%)
    • Amount of emails: Just right (94%) or would prefer more (6%)
    • Future reference: use BOFs for mentor stuff at the Cons
    • Future: keep the live commit shorter, if in the same room with sprinters: ~15-30 minutes
  • Sprint room location was great.
  • Mentor dinner funding:
*DA said that it cannot be part of the sponsor packet for Dublin (not sure if it's just too late, or it cannot be done at all).
    • @todo alimac - Follow up with Amanda whether this is off the table just for Dublin or doable for Baltimore,
    • It is difficult to hold this event without a budget and not being allowed on the prospectus.
      • Novice Issue Triage:
    • Attended by 8-9 people
    • Triaged 8-10 issues, two mentors re-wrote re-roll doc
    • Made a big impact to reach out to people
    • Great conversations, great engagement
    • Suggestion: have flyers/printouts with mentor event dates/times/locations, sprint day location/info
      • Tools
    • Davidh: in-browser editing tools would be cool
    • Heddn: Container-based installer would be better
      • Philosophical conversation on the purpose of the mentoring program:
    • Mission statement: “The Drupal Core mentors inspire, enable, and encourage new core contributors.
Mentoring coordinators recruit and coach other mentors. They work on contributor tools, documentation, and processes to make it easier for new contributors to get involved. They organize communications and logistics, and actively participate in mentoring.”
    • heddn: focused sprinting on things that bring the greatest benefit
    • Cilefen: would be good to have a way to measure success of this program, and the impact of mentored sprints toward forwarding the Drupal project, which is the whole point, no?
    • Cilefen: Raised the question of a vastly smaller mentoring footprint at the Cons. Such as: mentored tables only and laptop setup BoFs or a talk. Mentoring at the booth?
    • L.A resulted in an influx of IRC attendees. NOLA did not.
    • Heddn: takes business cards and stays in touch with mentees
    • Davidh: More new mentees may be attracted to Slack than to IRC. See https://www.drupal.org/node/2490332.
