Hi Guys,
The present version of the mongodb module uses the older mongo driver (mongo.so) with the new one being "mongodb.so".
This driver is expects php5.4+ and is backwards compatible to previous versions of mongo: https://docs.mongodb.com/ecosystem/drivers/php/
With the release of php7 and mongo 3.2, I would like to propose that at least the 8.x branch be coded to use this driver. What's the best way to go about it? More importantly, what's the community's appetite for it? I have a background in programming (but am VERY rusty). I can help in any way you guys need.
Thoughts?

MongoDB for D8 at DevDays Milan
I would say you probably should not expect it on 7.x, but I'm working on it a DevDays Milan this week.
If you're interested in working on that, please join the #drupal-mongodb channel and we can shape up the new version.
Main issue is currently https://www.drupal.org/node/2644482
Regarding your question about appetite, it seems never to have been very high : MongoDB use in Drupal is only frequent on the bigger sites, which tend to do a lot of work on their own anyway. I'm fortunate enough that my clients prefer the work to be published, but it is not necessarily the general case.
