Community Media

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

This group is a space for both developers and staff working at/with Community Media Centers and Public Access TV Stations to discuss the implementation of Drupal and CiviCRM based systems. This project has a long, complicated history, but several key contributors have been contributing to this project since 2006.

The "CMDrupal" project focuses on all major components of the operational workflow of a Community Media Center and involves Drupal module development and custom configuration in several distinct but overlapping areas:

  • integration with CiviCRM for membership management and training class enrollment
  • a project based system for resource reservations linked to user training certifications
  • ingestion of video content and metadata integrated with local playback servers

The Community Media Starter Kits distributions provide the structure for the project. The starter kits are available in Easy (ESK), Moderate (MSK), and Difficult (DSK) versions. The starter kits are Drupal distributions that include most modules, libraries, and themes needed to build a community media related site, but are not designed as one size fits all solution. Even the Community Media Starter Kit (Easy) typically requires several hours of configuration and customization to meet the needs of an organization. The DSK is

If you are interested in getting involved in CMDrupal, please read our Commitment to Contribute. Unlike an open source project like Firefox that may actually benefit from just using the browser, this project requires users to eventually become contributors at some level to be successful.

How a Bill Becomes a Law… or a Feature becomes a Module included in a Starter Kit

This is one example of how some custom code became part of the contrib-cm layer of CMDrupal, the benefits of developing openly over open sourcing code after it's "done", and how this project continues to grow and change. Having a basic understanding this process is important for everyone using Drupal or CiviCRM in a community media environment. Probably not as important as understanding how a bill becomes a law, but like government… without an understanding of how it works, it is difficult to make improvements.

Utilizing new Features of Entity Reference and Feeds for Airings and VODs

We've been working with Entity Processor in Feeds for some time with channelAustin and MNN. First as a patch. Then as an unpublished branch of Feeds. With workarounds for a few remaining issues, combining this version of Feeds with the latest Entity Reference adds some really powerful functionality that we are already leveraging to pull an RSS feed of Airings from a Telvue and display it in FullCalendar.

Beardcast Season Begins!

It's hard to believe that the idea for breaking the community media related modules up into starter kits aimed at the easy, moderate, and difficult levels was suggested just a year ago at the pre-SXSW Community Media Summit. We've come a long way in that year and reached a major milestone last month when channelAustin and MNN both moved the Difficult Kit.

CiviCRM Config. Questions

We're starting to do some configuration in CiviCRM on our CM-site.

I'm wondering if there are any agreed upon configurations or best practices in the CM / Civi world.

In particular I am wondering:

Do you create new CONTACT TYPES in Civi?

What kind of GROUPS are you creating?

How are you using TAGS?

How do you prevent your CiviMail from landing in SPAM folders?

Thanks,
Jason

DrupalCon Portland

Since DrupalCon is in Portland this year, would anyone be interested in having our own little meetup at Portland Community Media? I'd love to meet / reacquaint with you all. I'm open to other ideas such as code sprints or the like if we prefer.

Just to entice you slightly, PCM has recently gone through an HD upgrade in our studios and are planning a Master Control HD upgrade later this year. By the time DrupalCon gets here we will likely be all HD inside the building.

Directions for Online Meetups

There have been some great discussions over the past months during our weekly online meetups and we should continue to talk on a regular basis. I think it is fair to say that the consensus has been that meeting every week is unnecessarily frequent. I doubt any CMCs are moving fast enough to consider and effectively contribute to a new topic every single week. The Fall survey also confirmed that Friday meetups are not ideal for most participants. I think these meetups would benefit from having sharper focus and being held monthly.
