Labor

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
This group should probably have more organizers. See documentation on this recommendation.

This group has the following goals:

  1. Promote the use of Drupal by labor organizations and workers.
  2. Provide a supportive network of labor-friendly, Drupal users to exchange ideas and best practices.
  3. Brainstorm ways Drupal could be made better to help the cause of unions.
  4. Have a good time doing our best to help unions communicate on the web.

Started by Prometheus Labor Communications, the Drupal Labor group is part of our larger mission to make sure unions make the most effective use of the Internet. Be sure to visit our website, Drupal for Labor.

Polling place lookup module

I'm pleased to report that my company, NGP VAN, Inc., has released the Google Civic module, which makes uses Google Civic API to provide polling place lookup functionality to any Drupal 6 or 7 website, in order to promote participation in the US general election on Nov. 6, 2012. (Or, for that matter, any election for which Google provides data.)

workersmemorialfund.org launches on Drupal

Last year my uncle was murdered by the Chrysler Corporation when he was crushed to death at work due to faulty safety equipment that management refused to replace. In his honor, I set up a memorial fund to help remember people killed due to unsafe workplaces. The memorial fund now has a website, which is (of course) powered by Drupal. It's currently pretty simple -- a few custom content types, a few views, and panels for the front page. It's using the Zen starterkit subtheme with a few minor tweaks. It might get more fancy over time, but for now, it gets the job done.

Canadian Labour Congress Drupal Launch

It happened while I was on vacation, but I wanted to announce the launch of the CLC's new Drupal site. It was a long process to migrate them from our old CMS, however it is a transition that we're glad to have helped them make. Canada's house of labour can now take advantage of Drupal's many socail networking tools as well as the online advocacy applications that we have built to help lobby for change.

This is a bilingual site which also has regional and campaign related mini-sites built into it.

New wiki set up. Do you want to use it?

Forgetting that Drupal for Labor had wiki node types already set up, I set up a Mediawiki wiki at http://wiki.drupalforlabor.org. I'm not sure how useful it will be or if it's even needed. I'm going to experiment with it just because I'd like to gain more familiarity with the different communication possibilities wikis open up.

But it's there if you want to use. If you have any ideas for how it might be beneficial, let everyone know what you're thinking, please.

AFL-CIO Launches "LaborWeb" Program

Here's an email I got from the AFL-CIO announcing the launch of their LaborWeb program. They are starting trainings on the new platform. My understanding, though I could be wrong, is that this system was developed in house and is based on software developed by AFT. This has obvious implications for those interested in building websites for labor unions:

Explaining the advantages of free software to union folks

Today, I launched the very beginning of the drupalforlabor.org website. As a first step, I wrote a page to help union folks grasp the difference between free and proprietary software. Please have a look and if you have time to provide feedback, I'd love to hear it: http://drupalforlabor.org/drupal_gives_unions_control
