The 2010 Seattle Drupal Clinic is coming soon!

When: Friday, July 9, 2010 - 9 AM to 4:30 PM
Where: North Seattle Community College, Clubroom CC-1360
Cost: $25 plus ticket service fee

Drupal Clinics are hands-on introductions, for beginners, to building a web site using Drupal. We will cover questions like "What can Drupal do?", "Why choose Drupal?", and general concepts of on-line content management with a database behind your web site. Then we'll work through the basics of setting up a Drupal site, including the use of the CCK and Views modules. See poplarclass.com for more details, and seattledrupalclinic2010.eventbrite.com to register.

Volunteers needed!

We found last year that having 5 or so volunteers on hand all day was crucial to the success of the workshop. If you are an experienced Drupaller, patient enough to help beginners as they learn the basics of Drupal, and can spend a Friday contributing to the local Drupal community, your help would be most welcome. Please add a comment on this event if you want to volunteer (if you want to attend the workshop as a learner, you need to register and pay on Eventbrite).

Volunteers will be rewarded with:

  • Lunch (see below)
  • The chance to introduce themselves and their company
  • Logo and link on the clinic web site

Lunch: Sandwich lunches come with sandwich, chips, water, apple, dessert and a couple hershey kisses. Salad lunches come with salad, a roll, water, apple, dessert and a couple hershey kisses. I will ask for all condiments/dressings to be on the side.

Choices:
1) Mesquite chicken sandwich: Grilled chicken, swiss, tomatoes, lettuce and honey dijon sauce on a wheat roll.
2) Roast beef sandwich: Tender cooked roast beef, lettuce, tomato and Swiss served on sourdough.
3) Vegan sandwich: Sliced avocado, tomatoes, hummus, sweet red pepper, red onion, lettuce and cucumber on wheat bread.
4) Avocado salad: Avocado, tomato, green onion, croutons, crumbled bleu cheese with bleu cheese dressing.

If you would like to volunteer and have the time, please add a comment here. Include your lunch choice, and contact me with the logo/link you would like to have on the web site.

Thanks!

Forgot to mention...

jhodgdon's picture

Volunteers: If you are interested, you can also showcase a site you have built (hopefully highlighting what modules you used to build it, in a quick lightning-talk style). I have put some time for this at the end of the day, and I think it would be a great time to expose these beginners to things you can do with Drupal.

Josh, David, and John: Thanks! Send me your link and/or logo you'd like to have on the web site, and how you'd like your name presented (Drupal user name, full name, nickname, etc.).

Group Audience?

metzlerd's picture

Hi, I'm down in Olympia, but have recently set up a couple of drupal sites for my church headquarters in Seattle. The tech guy there is interested in learning more about drupal. Would this be a good venue for that? What level is this event targeted?

On another note, although I can't get up to Seattle very much, I'd love to hook up with others in my general geographic area. I'm a contrib module maintainer (cas, formdefaults, forena). I'm not sure yet weather I'll be in town on that weekend (I should know soon, but I really don't now sorry), but if you still need some help, I'll really try and make it happen.

Dave

Down in Olympia Too!

bkmatwa's picture

Dave,

I'm down here in Olympia too (actually Lacey area). Great to hear there are more Drupalers down this way. Have you made it to the Tacoma meetings in the past? Should talk about doing a car pool with others from this area going up to Seattle/Tacoma for the Drupal Clinic or monthly meetings in Tacoma.

Carpool = Good Idea

metzlerd's picture

I haven't yet. I should and will try. I'll try and pay more attention to this groups postings.

A carpool sounds like a great idea! I'm game.

Looks like it's pretty solid that I'll be attending.

Also interested in volunteering/carpooling

epersonae2's picture

I need to figure out whether I'm actually available that day (vacation plans to square up with S.O.), but I'm definitely interested.

We really should look into a regular carpool to Tacoma...or maybe even an Olympia group!

Clinic Audience: Very beginning beginner

jhodgdon's picture

It sounds like your tech guy is the right audience - the workshop is aimed at people who are new to Drupal.

The agenda is here:
http://poplarclass.com/agenda

As far as help goes, that would be welcome, if you know CCK and Views pretty well, and are patient with beginners. It is NOT on a weekend, though. It is on a Friday.

Should've responded to this post first.

metzlerd's picture

Yep, I do know CCK and Views really well. Have used them to do slide shows, calendars, rss feeds, etc on multiple sites. I'll plan on driving up then. Again, sorry for hijacking your thread about Tacoma.

Yeah I figured out we're talking about friday. I'm still up for it.

Group audience

jhodgdon's picture

Oh... It looks like you were maybe asking about going to Tacoma or Seattle Drupal User Group meetings, not the clinic?

We have our next SeaDUG meeting next Thursday 6/17 (should be an announcement on groups.drupal.org/seattle in a few minutes), and the audience for those meetings is anyone (beginner to advanced).

Interested in the clinic

metzlerd's picture

No sorry for the confusion.

I am interested in the clinic, and whether to recommend it for my tech friend who is a drupal novice and not really a programmer. He's using a distro of drupal on a hosting site that I set up for him, but has been adding modules using plugin manager.

It looks like I will be able to volunteer to help with the clinic, assuming you still need it. Do you?

Dave

Thanks, yes!

jhodgdon's picture

Sure, that would be great... Assuming you want to drive up from Olympia. Or we can wait and see if others come through from Seattle. I would like to have 5 people, and currently have 3 + maybe you.

Food preference? And please contact me separately about how you'd like your name/link/logo listed on the workshop web site. (see post above)

I think 5-6 is enough. I'll be keeping in touch through the Google group (Dave - if you could join that would be great - sent you a private message with the link).

(Acquia) Drupal installation

stephenplatz's picture

Referring to the pre-clinic instructions: Is there any reason, besides the bundled modules, that we need to have a new Acquia Drupal installation to effectively participate in the clinic? I've been using Drupal for a while and do not intend to subscribe to any of the Acquia network services. If it's simply a matter of having the modules, could you list the ones we'll be using; or should I simply install all of the modules bundled with an Acquia Drupal full install? Thanks!

Hmmm...

jhodgdon's picture

You can set it up yourself without Acquia if you prefer -- we suggested Acquia because it has the modules we need in one package, because they also offer a web server installation, and because they sometimes patch modules to ensure they're working correctly.

The first section of the Step by Step guide to what we're covering in the class lists all the modules we'll be using (in the section about enabling modules).

I would also add that if you've been using Drupal for a while, you might be a bit bored in the workshop... It's really aimed at beginners, though if you aren't all that familiar with Views and CCK, you will probably get something out of it.

OK, I'll get a fresh install

stephenplatz's picture

OK, I'll get a fresh install on my local machine with the appropriate modules ready to go. I can always stand to hear more ideas about using CCK and Views!

Install Acquia on MAMP?

risingPhoenix's picture

For your pre-clinic instructions, I already installed completed items 1-2 and they were very simple. For item 3, would it be advantageous to install Acquia on MAMP, or should I just install it on my web host? I had problems with MAMP in the past, like my sites running very slow on it. Thanks and I'm looking forward to the clinic!

It's either-or

jhodgdon's picture

Sorry that wasn't clear -- you have your choice of doin #1, #2, or #3 for the class. There is no need to do all three.

That makes senses. Thanks!

Run Acquia with Internet Connection Off

risingPhoenix's picture

I have Acquia installed and it was very easy. However, I found that I can only run Acquia with my internet connection turned on. Is there any way to run Acquia with my internet connection turned off? If yes, what setting must I change in Acquia to make that happen?

I have done a search on Google, Drupal.org, and Acquia.com and couldn't find an answer.

You may want to disable the

Thanks for your help thus far.

jkopel's picture

When you say you can only run it with your internet connection turned on, what exactly do you mean?
What happens when you turn your internet connection off?
For that matter, why are you turning it off to begin with?

I know that if you disconnect some browsers get confused about local servers (i,e, the local server your acquia drupal is using). For instance Firefox has a "work offline" option in the file menu. If you are using FF, try turning off your internet connection and then uncheck the "work offline" option.

I'll take your chicken sandwich choice.

Dennis- do you still have a ticket to sell?

maggieb's picture

Hi. A colleague of mine attempted to purchase a ticket after it sold out. Please reply if you still have the ticket you were looking to sell. Thank you, Maggie

oops- should have read the thread more closely.

Looking forward to class!

itsnotsohot's picture

I'll have a fresh install of Drupal (i think core) + module instead of Acquia. I've used Drupal a few times now to build very simple sites, but your work on a photo gallery and more views experience is what I'm looking forward to... I have only barely tinkered there and could use some sagely advice / experience guiding my path.

I also have some "best practices" questions on my own drupal site ( www.DiveZen.com ), so hopefully I'll be able to network with some folks and get your good ideas.

Thanks,
John

Not planning to attend?

If you have registered and find you are unable to attend, I would love to take your place!

Thanks,

Any chance for a late addition to the class?

teddybaz's picture

Hi,
I was told 2 mins ago by my boss to become a drupal expert, so I JUST learned of this group and the clinic.
Is there any way you guys have space for a last-minute addition?!

Doesn't hurt to ask, right?! lol

teddy b

Sorry...

We are sold out on the clinic tomorrow. I have already turned down several people who have tried to get in after we sold out... sorry!
