Vancouver

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Welcome to VANDUG!

The Vancouver Drupal Users Group (VanDUG) is the local meeting place for Greater Vancouver people interested in Drupal. We were formerly known as the Vancouver League of Drupalers, but that's a long story.

The group mostly hangs out on Slack at https://vandug.slack.com/. We also post our meetings on Meetup.com at https://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Drupal-Users-Group. All are welcome, it's listed as a private group to keep out the griefers.

We've been holding semi-regular virtual meetings during COVID-19.

EVENT DATE CHANGE

We are moving back the 2017 Drupal North Summit to August 25th-27th.

We’ve made this change as we realized the original July date was not the ideal timing for the event. Out of consideration, respect, and in support for other Drupal events in the general region, we have chosen to pick an alternative date.

We know it’s always a challenge with the community growing so fast and with events such as these Summits, Camps, and Cons, popping up all over the world, we can’t appease everyone and there may be some closely timed events. But, we are going to try our best!

Drupal Meetup: Awesome Web Based “Apps” using Drupal 8 and Ember.js

Start:
2017-05-25 18:30 - 20:00 America/Vancouver
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Ever wanted to build your own web application? Drupal 8's new architecture has made huge strides in allowing us to make the application development process much simpler and easier to work with. In this presentation, Trent will show you how you can use Drupal 8 to power your own web application by leveraging Drupal's native tools, as well go into what Ember.js can do to make the front-end development perform optimally with your new application.

This presentation is for all looking to build and use an API to power your web application. Trent will share with you some of the experiences, challenges, and wins, of using Drupal 8 as an API. Trent will also showcase an application that was developed for the Telus World of Science, targeted at 8-13 year olds, and how to think of how to leverage Drupal for more than just the web. Come join the conversation!

Drupal Meetup: get your Drupal site tuned and ready to take the stage!

Start:
2017-04-20 18:30 - 20:00 America/Vancouver
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Your new site is ready to go! It's built, developed, themed, and integrated. Breakpoints break gracefully, you've got zilllions of tests passing, and the client has QAd and signed off. You're ready to launch!

...not so fast. Er, the site, that is... is not so fast. On launch, under real load, sometimes nasty surprises await.

High-traffic sites, sites with external integrations, or sites that have large numbers of authenticated users often run into unexpected performance issues. But with the right planning and tools, we can give our site a full dress-rehearsal. Those issues can be simulated and fixed before the curtain goes up.

What you'll learn

This session will discuss how to:

  • do iterative performance testing
  • build robust and realistic load test scenarios using jMeter
  • find and address performance issues using tools like XHProf and New Relic, and
  • quantitatively measure to improve backend site performance.

The talk will be based around case-studies from real enterprise-scale sites, and discuss specific steps you can take to assess, diagnose, and fix performance problems on sites of all sizes.

About the speaker

Renée Stephen has been making Drupal sing and dance for a decade in the education, non-profit, and government space. She's now a Technical Consultant at Acquia, where she does a bit of everything: hands-on coding, troubleshooting site performance, and leading architecture and infrastructure workshops for clients of all shapes and sizes.

Examples

A repository of example jMeter files demo'd is available here: https://github.com/reinette/loadtest

Drupal Meetup: Which Type Of Testing Is Right For Me?

Start:
2017-03-30 18:30 - 20:00 America/Vancouver
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

There are so many types of testing nowadays! Code static analysis checks, unit testing, functional testing, front-end performance testing, load testing, visual regression testing. But which one shall I use in real life project with limited time and budget? There is no easy answer.

We will talk about many types of testing and what kind of projects you would need them. This talk is not going to be about comparing tools for testing but rather about principles of each testing. Specifically what you should take into account when starting thinking about introducing automated testing to your project and how you can achieve coverage with minimal efforts.

Also we will touch topic of how to set up flexible testing environment into your process, Continuous Integration techniques.

This is a technology agnostic presentation with a focus on concepts though we will be touching on systems such as Jenkins, Code Sniffer, PHPUnit, Drupal Test Runners, Behat, Selenium, JMeter, Speed Curve, backtrac.io
