Presentation on managing Drupal projects with Git and GitHub

I just thought I post a little information about a presentation I am going to be giving at the October meetup. At the last meetup, I was asked if I would mind giving a presentation on the use of GitHub in managing Drupal projects. We have pretty much switched all of our development versioning to Git at CollectiveColors.com, because it has shown to have significant benefits in our own development processes.

Git makes it easier for us because:

  1. It allows us to better collaboratively develop our software while minimizing the impact of code conflicts.
  2. Allows us to easily track what we have developed.
  3. Branching and merging of repositories is a breeze.
  4. It is very easy to turn any directory tree into a Git repository.
  5. Git submodules are perfect for Drupal development.

We have learned a lot of really cool methods for managing software projects using Git and GitHub, so we figured that we would share some of what we have learned in our journey so far. Although, I have a rough outline of what I want to talk about during this presentation, I am open to hearing your suggestions, after all I'm not presenting to myself.

So what I am thinking so far? ...

CINDUG - Cincinnati Drupal Users Group - October meeting

Start:
2009-10-07 18:30 - 21:00 America/New_York
Organizers:

Last month was pretty successful in doing a series of 'lighting' presentations. Since we do not have a specific topic for October, we will be doing them again. Anybody present can get up and talk about anything they want, as long as it is Drupal related. Usually this would be 5 - 15 minutes each, but we are fine if they run long.

If you have a topic to discuss, post a comment about it here.

The meeting will be at our standard time (first Wednesday of the month) and location:
Cincinnati Public Library - Main Branch
Meeting room 3A

800 Vine Street
Cincinnati, Ohio
45202-2009

New module to test out!

Hey CINDUG + Drupal crew!

I thought I would let you know that a cool new module: http://drupal.org/project/tvi (Taxonomy Views Integrator) has been released for your consideration. Please let me know what you think. What would you do differently?

The module is in Beta so I do not recommend using it in production however if it is as useful for others as it has been for us, then it will have lots of bright minds helping to make it better.

Thanks Adrian for your assistance and support.

Thanks Chris, for your advise and encouragement.

Cheers, Derek

CINDUG: Using the menu tree in the theme

I have a site I am working on where I need to change the page banner based on which part of the primary menu tree the page is located in. The company has two divisions, and if the current page is anywhere in the 'division A' menus, I want to use one set of code, and if it's in 'division B' menus, I want to use another set.

I started looking into menu_get_active_trail(), but that doesnt appear to be returning useable data. Maybe I am trying to use it in the wrong context, as part of the page.tpl.php?

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

External Database Query

Wondering if anyone has any experience querying an external database and displaying the results in a node.

Actually both querying and inserting into a database....

I know I could build pages with php code, but I would rather use a module (if its available) or a drupal standard way....

Thanks!!

SEO, anyone?

Has anyone done much with Drupal's SEO tools? If you have, please pipe up at the September meeting, I'm very interested in hearing about your experience and any tips tricks you've picked up along the way.

Even though we'll be getting Zen with Zen, it'd be great to talk about some SEO judo.

Drupaler Needed for Church Website

My church pastor recently approached me about the need to expand the church ministry through the Internet. He wants to reach out to people through the internet (streaming online sermon, podcast, etc...). He wants a dynamic multimedia church website. He has asked me to come up with a price quote and also he needs it ASAP. I know very well that Drupal will be the best choice for such project considering the requirements listed below. I'm a newbabe when it comes to Drupal. Here is the Deal!

Freemind mindmaps

There is currently a module called freemind that allows users to view a mindmap of taxonomies on the site, and uses the Open Source Freemind software: http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

We may have a need for a site (a quick need) to be able to do more than just view mindmaps, but create, save, and edit them. All within Drupal.

This is beyond my scope of coding knowledge - so is anyone interested in assisting in building this functionality?

What to do with the Indiana Drupal Users Group

There will be no meeting this month. I've been too busy to set one up and my schedule had limited availability to attend even if one was scheduled.
Our last meeting had more pizzas than people. [My family really enjoyed the left overs!]
Anyone can schedule a meetup via the "Create Event" option on this site.
Tony at Promethius is available for contact if some one wishes to contact him to schedule a meetup
Kevin Finney is available to schedule the Mid West Internet building in broadripple where we have our hackfests.
