Yes, it's useless/too difficult to explain to visitors

Why?

Any reason why? Isn't it currently an option to turn off and on?

It's an option, but a bad one

Sure there is the option to turn it off and on.
But the question I want to raise here is:
is turning it on actually a sensible thing to do, usability-wise?

If you turn it on, you have to explain to the user that they have to copy the code from the image, but they have to take into account that all characters appear twice, sometimes obvious, sometimes not depending on color variability, distortion etc.
I think it is very hard to explain this to normal nongeek humans, without the CAPTCHA being not too intrusive/annoying.

It's indeed optional, but under the hood there is source code for us to maintain (and the double vision related source code is not very elegant atm).

In my opinion the advantages of having a bad feature do not outweigh the disadvantages of maintaining it, so I would remove it. However, since I'm not the only user of image CAPTCHA, I created this poll to have an idea if people really like or (would) use the double vision feature.

If we would agree to remove it, we should remove it from the Drupal 6 version (6.x-1.x or higher) and maybe leave it in the Drupal 5 version (5.x-3.x)?

Another option is to make the feature better, but I just think that double vision for an image CAPTCHA is a flawed concept.

bye

Is "double vision"...?

Is "double vision" responsible for creating blurry letters that I have seen at one site? If so, I definitely never want to set Captcha up to be that challenging. Thus I voted YES!

I'm not sure what you mean with "blurry", but the default double vision feature of the captcha module 5.x-3.x generates something like this:
Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com
You have 5 foreground characters, which are repeated in a lighter color in the background.
The correct answer for this CAPTCHA is "bTG5S", but I guess some people could go for something like "bTGG55SS".

A CAPTCHA should be hard for bots, not for humans ;)
