Zen Task Force group

craigntammy's picture

Hey just saw the drupal dojo group - http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-dojo - and it gave me an idea.

How about having some tabs on the top of the group to organize it a bit.

Some thoughts:

  1. discussions
  2. built with zen (sites built with zen to show its flexibility) maybe "theme garden" :)
  3. help section
  4. official updates and news

Just thought I would provoke some thought on this. Any other ideas?

you should do that! go for it! heh, before we start discussing the color of the bike shed again. this topic would appear in "discussions" and that would be good.

Sounds good to me

And I've actually done a panels integration on a different group that I manage. Its a really nice new feature of OG.

Unfortunately, the only person who can implement this change on the Zen Task Force group is the Manager of the group.

Jeff, do you want to do it? Or do you want to just make me the manager of this group and have me do it?

thats no longer true. any admin is supposed to be able to manage panels for the group. if i have a bug, let me know. look for the Pages tab when viewing group home page.

That's cool!

Any group admin can setup a panels homepage? Sweet. Of course, I'm not an admin of the Zen Task Force group either... :-)

Jeff, care to "admin: create" me on http://groups.drupal.org/og/users/2688 ?

Sounds like things are all set here. Let me know if I can do anything to help.

Clarification

Ok. So I see the need for 1, 2, and 4 on your list, Craig. But what is 3? Links to the online docs and the issue queue?

Done!

Take a look!

Any more suggestions? More bike shed issues? :-)

start small, start soon

i bet once you put up those changes, people can give better feedback and we can more clearly say "oh yes that is brilliant" or "oh my goodness, what the heck is THAT?

you have to be brave and have a thick skin- but it is sometimes good to "start small and start soon"...

Confused…

i bet once you put up those changes…

Does this mean you can’t see the changes now? I specifically tested to make sure even anonymous users could see the panel pages.

my two cents

ah... slaps forehead i see now!

  • The theme garden tab makes me realise we need to get more themes in the theme garden. I wish I had something to offer. It's good to highlight that area we need to develop, even if there is not alot of content there yet.

  • The link to "Official updates and announcements (see all)"
Can we get that all into one box? Now it is comprised of 3 boxes, for title, content, and the link. The link to see all is at the bottom, maybe bring that up to the top title, or make the entire title a link too? or add a (see all) in brackets?

  • Re: content: Topic- "Call for a new project homepage image..." we don't need that up there anymore. it's a done-deal, right? Can it be demoted to archive?

  • The members list is very big, and to tab through it, it reloads the entire front page. Maybe have a "members" tab? Maybe the sidebar, which has the "most recent members" can have a link at the top: See Members. I see that Drupal Dojo has it, but I don't think it is necessary to include that area on the front page- however a simple members list with tab would be nice.

  • I like the list of posts on http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-education -- it is maybe a bit too long (since it's not too active, and things 8 weeks ago aren't exactly fresh topics). But maybe a small section with a title/link "Discussions" (instead of All Posts in Group) on the front page will let people see where the action is? Maybe even 5 recent posts?

  • HELP! - When I went to help section, I was surprised that it was just a link to the support queue? I'd have expected another discussion forum here... like "how would i do X?" kinda questions. So not seeing them there, or being directed to the support queue... seemed strange. But... I guess that you want to funnel all support to the queue. You know, I wouldn't have asked a "how do I do X" on a support queue. For the queue, I would only put up urgent "this isn't working like it says it would" kinds of questions.

Just my thinking on it! Take what you like, and leave the rest.

Tabs are good, thank you loads.

Wow.

wow this discussion has progressed, I guess I need to visit this group more often :)

John my original idea was the same as heather. But whatever works best is best.

"HELP! - When I went to help section, I was surprised that it was just a link to the support queue? I'd have expected another discussion forum here... like "how would i do X?" kinda questions. Great job!

Now what do you think?

JohnAlbin's picture

I've implemented most of Heather's comments. (Thanks, Heather!)

As for the "help" tab. Yes, there are a couple "help me" requests that end up in the Zen Task Force:

See http://groups.drupal.org/node/9307 many issues on the bottom half of http://groups.drupal.org/node/2688/discussions?page=1

But those support requests posted to the Zen Task Force don't seem to get much actual help. That's why the "Help" tab points them to the other places.

order by "updated"

heather's picture
heather - Mon, 2008-05-26 17:13

hmm.. thinking about how the topics are ordered.

i would expect that a new post to an old topic would "bump" to the top of the list. but instead, they stay in the order of creation date, rather than updated date.

do you have control over that?

i especially noticed it when i came to the forum to check out a post on the 'blueprint' theme, but it didn't appear in either of the lists on the front page.

what do others think about this?

Sorting by recent comments

Sorting by "recent comment date" would be an excellent feature!

Unfortunately, it not something currently possible with OG's panels.

oo cool! now i see "updated"

heather - Mon, 2008-05-26 22:30

oo cool! now i see "updated" and "new" on that list of just titles. that is cool.

that is helpful because now the older titles which have updates are going to appear with the "updated" next to it.

big improvement, i think! thank you.
