Git migration launch date re-set to Thursday, February 24.

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

After careful deliberation, the Git Migration Team has decided to postpone launch one week to Thursday, February 24 at 3pm PST to allow time for final server configuration and additional testing.*

All the the individual components involved in the Git migration have been tested in the staging environment but bringing them together on the production hardware has taken longer than we allowed for. The team agreed we would all feel much more comfortable with a buffer of at least two full days of uninterrupted community testing prior to deployment.

Thanks very much for your patience and understanding. Please keep your eyes on the Git Migration Community Testing Wiki and https://twitter.com/drupalgitgremln for further developments and for information on how you can help.

* An indispensable team member is currently scheduled for jury duty next week; if he is selected, we may need to make some additional adjustments.

Good judgement call

With something this major, better to get it right and be even a few weeks or months later than originally scheduled.

:(, but I guess it will help

Will CVS be removed immediately?

advseb's picture

Hi,

what happens after Git migration? Will CVS repos be removed immediately or what is going to happen? We sync the modules we use for our own site directly from CVS to our internal version control system. How can we do that in the future?

Regards,
Sebastian

I am pretty sure that CVS is

I am pretty sure that CVS is going away immediately. Whenever http://giv-dev.drupal.org is open for testing, you should use it to work on converting your scripts.

An official migration person might have a better answer.

CVS will still exist, but will not be updated

rfay's picture

After the migration, CVS will still be accessible, but it will be read-only and will, of course, not be updated.

So build scripts or drush make files that depend on it will not "break" in the near term, but of course, the data in CVS will become stale quite soon.

I was under the impression

The Jury duty thing sucks, stuff like that always crops up when you don't want it to.

Wohoo!

Now I might actually have time to test it pre-launch! :D

Jury Duty

When in the selection process for jury duty, stand up and shout: "That evil (expletive) is GUILTY!!!! I know it!!! I'll make sure he/she fries!!!" (this will likely not be followed by being selected for jury duty)

All joking aside, can't wait for the final push to GIT! Looking forward to working with my current github repos and multiple remotes to push to Drupal/GitHub in new ways!

This kind of annoys everyone,

Josh The Geek's picture

This kind of annoys everyone, it's Git (the vcs) or git (the command) but not GIT because it is not an abbreviation.
Also, to mirror a repo, add another push url to the remote in .git/config: push will push to all

OK, so there's one reason we can say GIT!

rfay's picture

I think Jake was using caps for emphasis. It's OK. Legitimate usage. You know, like shouting in IRC.

And we can all (except Sam) now calm down about the capitalization issue. It's not that important. And we have Sam, who will stand up for the rights of Git and git against the usurper GIT anywhere and any time, so the rest of us don't have to.

If there's too much more controversy over this I'm going to start capitalizing GIT all the time :-)

I tweeted about this

wizonesolutions's picture

I tweeted about this recently. Some people just capitalize all proper nouns. GIT, LA DRUPAL, DRUSH, VIEWS, you know...it happens. I don't know why. Maybe somebody knows why.
