e-Commerce module or modules?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I'll ask the site admin here about this later, but I figured I'd pose the question here first. Most of the time at g.d.o. there is a single group for an interest area, rather than for a single module. My question is: do you think this group should be retitled "e-Commerce Modules" or "e-Commerce and Drupal" and opened up to general discussions of e-Commerce implementations and the other modules (atm just Ubercart) that focus on e-Commerce? Given the almost complete lack of activity in the e-Commerce module itself, and the fact that the group already seems to be about Ubercart as well, it seems like a change of name and a slight change of mission is warranted. Thoughts?

A change would be good.

I've actually asked this question a couple times in pm, without answer. I think a Drupal commerce group is desperately needed. In my opinion separate groups for the eCommerce - Module and Ubercart only inhibit group efforts / community involvement.

I would vote for this group becoming the e-commerce with Drupal group.

This group is about the

This group is about the Drupal e-Commerce module and not Ubercart event though it took ages to get them to understand that!

If we need another group for the discussion of e-Commerce in general then one will need to be created.

"Them"?

alex ua's picture

Who is "them"? People looking for a place to discuss e-commerce solutions in general? People wondering about the "death" of e-commerce? The Ubercart dev team? Bears?

Anyway, that's fine with me, but I'd still be interested to hear from more people. I think having both an "e-commerce module" group and a "e-commerce for Drupal" group (or something similar) might cause some confusion...

Absolutely Agree

I agree, Drupal needs a place for general e-commerce discussions.

It does not have to be here, and frankly, I believed this to be the group for the e-comm module when I signed up for it - so keep the info coming about the module here please. I can't wait to see what's next.

However, I have studied Drupal, and internet commerce tremendously. The single weakest part of the Drupal empire is monetization. But that is the constant paradox between open source and for profit anyway.

So a general group/location to discuss earning from our Drupal sites would surely be welcome by the community, and I believe would quickly become one of the more popular groups in the entire community.

And as a side bar, we might be able to come up with some creative ways to fund quicker development schedules for our overworked genius developers in the community. The rest of us are counting on them to blow our socks off with the new modules, the least we can do is show some love.

Hi,

I have been looking at eCommerce options since I started using Drupal a year ago. I think a specific group for discussing all general eCommerce questions is really needed (more like a highlevel group).

I think this group should remain what it was supposed to be: a group to discuss the eCommerce modules specifically. I think UbertCart and the eCommerce modules both merit their own group. I therefore suggest that the UberCart people have a group for themself:

  • eCommerce for Drupal or eCommerce General or Monetization and eCommerce -> general topics covering all eCommerce and monetization solutions from a high point of view (i.e. no detailed debate about either modules),
  • eCommerce modules -> discussion about one specific solution being the eCommerce modules and their related buddies
  • UberCart modules -> discussion about one specific solution being the UbertCart modules and their related buddies

I think a bit more clarity in term of communication around eCommerce may help newbies like me and bring a bit more life in this area,

Hope this helps,

Kind regards,
Marc.

Just to follow up. AlexUA and myself discussed this further @ Drupalcon Szeged and decided to create the Drupal Commerce group. It's an open place for all things related to making money online with Drupal. The group is less then a week old, so we don't have much content yet, but we look forward to your posts
