Usability Idea for the Profile page and the Edit Account page.

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hi everyone, I just created a new feature request for D8: Separate User Profiles and User Settings because is one of the things I always end up changing in every project.

The main idea is to create a Settings page to hold all the account and user settings and separate it from the Profile page. Also, the settings page should be divided into small sections of settings to avoid having a long form with multiple settings in it.

I also created a sandbox project at http://drupal.org/sandbox/lelizondo/1098228 for D7 to test what I'm proposing.

Here are some screenshots of what I'm proposing:

  1. http://drupal.org/files/issues/Screen%20shot%202011-03-21%20at%2010.15.1... - A blank page is better than this.
  2. http://drupal.org/files/issues/Tabs_0.png - Tabs are confusing.
  3. http://drupal.org/files/issues/Proposed%20Account%20Settings.png - The settings account page should look like this
  4. http://drupal.org/files/issues/Proposed%20Password%20Settings.png - This is the password settings
  5. http://drupal.org/files/issues/Proposed%20Profile%20Settings.png - The profile and picture settings
  6. http://drupal.org/files/issues/Proposed%20Shortcuts%20Settings.png - Any other module, in core or contrib, should place the user settings like this.
  7. http://drupal.org/files/issues/Twitter%20Account%20Settings.png - Twitter do something very similar, more sites like Digg do the same thing.
  8. http://drupal.org/files/issues/Twitter%20Password%20Settings.png - The password settings page at Twitter

I would like to know what do you think.

To make it even more flexible and future proof

The ability for the administrator to create and edit tabs himself and choose which User Account Fields (like picture, status, roles, password etc.), Profile Fields, how many of them and in what order to put in each tab would make the User Profile Settings very flexible and future proof.

From the design point of view - make User Account Fields like Profile Fields for the user profile page?
