We are planning a virtual sprint focused on implementing new feature for the 7.x version, as well as stabilizing it and moving towards an RC release.
Additional work may begin on a 6.x-3.x branch.

Is it also the plan to upgrade to the freshly released apache solr 3.1? Not sure what's the compatibility between 3.1 and 1.4 but that'll be nice to migrate.

I expect we will be fully
I expect we will be fully compatible with 3.1, but at this point do not plan to require it.
However, testing with 3.1 would be a good task for the sprint.

Looking at some of the great new the features http://lucene.apache.org/solr/#March+2011+-+Solr+3.1+Released I suspect we will rapidly want to make that the standard version.
I've use the velocity template feature already for quick projects.
