A qualified vote
I voted for "Diversity and Outreach" as the best of not so great options, far better than the current name. I far preferred "Drupal Diversity Action" because it indicates, well, action. I would like "Diversity and Outreach Revolution Project" if I had any real hope for the chances of revolutionary action regarding diversity in this community... but really, if I did have that hope, I'd rather see "Diversity & anti-Oppression Revolution Project (DORP)" or, even better, "Drupal Anti-Oppression Education (DARE)"...
Added Jack's suggestions
I seem to have some special powers on here, as I was able to add yet more options to the poll - Jack if you want to update your vote, you should be able to cancel your vote then revote!
Thanks!
Heh... thanks for making my suggestions into actual options, Ariane!
My suggestions were mostly jests, and cynical jests at that, I must admit. I'm sorry to be cynical so early on; I just see so many well-meaning "diversity" initiatives get so watered down that they're rendered impotent, ineffective, and actually upsetting to the very people they're supposed to "help." So especially in a community where we're connected by software rather than shared politics, identity, or something like that, I can't help but be skeptical and afraid of being hurt, let down, or frustrated.
That said, I revised my vote to "Drupal Anti-Oppression Education," because ultimately that's what I'd like the group to be about – addressing issues of oppression, power, and privilege, educating folks about those issues, responding to incidents that come up in those areas, and ultimately pushing the Drupal community to a better place around those issues.
Is that what this group will really be? Is that what most of us want from it? I don't know. My vote on the name might just be wishful thinking. If that's not the ultimate goal of the group as determined by the overall vibe of the people who are making this happen, then Diversity & Outreach is my second runner up.
Can't we get an instant runoff voting module up here? ;)
I think jest is a completely
I think jest is a completely acceptable/appropriate response when it comes to certain topics! ;)
As far as the implications of the name - I guess what I personally would like to see this group work towards:
Outreach to anyone who feels sidelined, alienated, less than, other, or otherwise shunned because of factors of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, psychological/mental/physical health conditions/disabilities, age, wealth, etc.
Increasing Diversity by being more aware and supportive of anyone falling into these categories, and being ambassadors of openness to them. Helping them constructively and compassionately to a) feel a rightful part of the community, and b) find their niche(s) of what parts of the Drupal project they might help with or participate in.
Revolution is the goal! But of course, like Jack, I have enough skepticism in me to think that would be a bit naive. That said, in idealist terms, I would love all of these to become non-issues, and that anyone who wants to be a constructive member of the community be accepted and supported in that goal. It's a huge community, so we obviously have the resources to support everyone, just maybe not the explicit awareness/tools.
I voted for Diversity and Outreach, because I think it communicates that well while being approachable.
This is what I want from the group too
For my part, this is what I want this group to be. I've seen a tremendous number of activist groups, community initiatives, student projects, etc, that talk a lot about diversity but don't do a lot about it, and just as many disturbing, paternalistic approaches to diversity. These approaches are frustrating, because they don't talk about the power structure or the specific ways that people are left out.
We need to talk about specific tactics and strategies for creating value for people who've been unfairly left out of a community like Drupal. For me, a group like this should be about welcoming people who are marginalized by the structure of a system. How do we uncover modes of oppression and marginalization, restructure power to be equitable, representative, and fair, and treat each other well in the process?
But the name is clunky...
The anti-oppression name doesn't quite work for me.
How about inspiration?
When i think of this movement, I think of talking passionately to these communities about our love of Drupal, but not really saying anything about them being perceived as marginalized or anything like that.
I think more like people playing a great game trying to get other people to play the game . . . wait for it . . . for the love of the game!
So how about Drupal Diversity Inspiration Project [yes, i'm throwing acronyms and backronyms out]
what you don't know will inspire you
Added that to the options
Added that to the options (and I currently have a 2 week timeout on the poll, but will see if we get a decent # of responses by then).
I totally don't think we want to explicitly say "hey you, marginalized people, come join!" but more to be a resource/support system. And perhaps to initiate some specific programs or projects that anyone who's having trouble getting started (maybe they're just really shy!) or feeling like part of the community, can come to for a little extra support.
We should definitely be glowing examples of people who love working with Drupal and care a lot about having an open, supportive, and inclusive community.
From another planet!
When asked what i would call My People with Disabilities group (If I re-applied for it), Someone suggested "From Another Planet". I really like that.

You don't think that's too
You don't think that's too much implying that members really "don't belong"?
Not the person to ask.
For Me, its just about being able to do a good job, and to try my best to be a good person. Those that judge are the ones that suffer, I dont have to adopt their hate or anger, I have enough problems without taking on someone elses, so I guess I dont really know anymore.

Community process ftw
Well, I take it as a good sign we still haven't come up with consensus on a name, but keep getting closer.
"From another planet" is sassy (reminds me of when people say we're all brothers from another mother), but probably inappropriate.
I dig jackalope's idea that the group be about anti-oppression education. But the name itself feels clunky to me. Those seem a little too much like terms of art within the activist community. And it's a "negative" name in the sense it describes what the group is against, which always seems tricky (but it can work, as in the case of Anti-Racist Action... perfect name, explains exactly what they're all about). It's my front runner, but it still isn't quite satisfying.
I'm no good at names, but shouldn't "community" be somehow part of the name?
don't forget the ladies
Sure, we're all "brothers from another mother" . . . and the ladies are "sisters from another mister"
And I also like the "from another planet" . . . makes me think of the Star Trek Federation
what you don't know will inspire you
I think we need to keep in
I think we need to keep in mind what will be welcoming to people who already feel isolated/unwelcome. Even if it's in jest, I wouldn't feel good about directing people to a group called "from another planet".
Group name should be:
Hi all,
what about FRINGE DWELLERS
"Neither well versed in their own indigenous cultures and languages nor well adapted to urban living"
What am I? A dollar late and a day short?
Fringe Dwellers ain't so bad since we are talking about folks in the margins... I don't want to add complication to the mix as there are alot of great options on the poll (do you want a revolution?! whoop-whoop!). But could we sub "anti-oppression" with "subversion"? I am feeling the anti-oppression goal, but trying to solve for the anti-oppression/clunky part.
all options added. vote away!
all options added. vote away!
Voted for D&O
Because...
a) People in the old poll mentioned the great point about the word "recruitment" having very negative connotations. I'm all for cutesy acronyms, but not at the expense of ticking off people for whom the group is intended.
b) "Revolution" is false advertising, as Jack mentioned.
c) "None of the above" is just giving up. :)
d) The word "oppression" is problematic for me because given our diversity, there are people in our community who have lived through real-world experiences of wrongful imprisonment, torture, murder, and friends/loved ones being "disappeared." I think someone from that background would take significant issue with this group effectively "co-opting" the word to mean "inequality." Chasm of difference, there.
e) "Fringe"/"From another planet" both to me feel like marginalizing people's diversity rather than celebrating it.
f) "Subversion" is a great word, but is unfortunately also a sub-standard version control system, and since most of our community are geeks, it's bad for branding. ;)
"Diversity & Outreach" might not be cutesy or fancy, but it is honest about this group's intentions, without being offensive.
Diversity and Outreach
Diversity and Outreach - so it doesn't have a majority, but it has the most votes by a margin, and several others said it would be cool by them.
Shall we make it official? Naysayers?
I'm not certain Heather is following this anymore, if not I can email her, and I think we can probably manage to get a couple other people admin rights.
+1
I'm in consensus, fwiw.
