I know that work is still progressing on Panels 2 but I also saw a call for ideas for Panels 3. So with that in mind I thought I'd point to some info I saw over on Yahoo's YUI blog. It's only in preview release but one of the example's looks like it may have some nice functionality that could be borrowed.

The Draggable Portal is a common design pattern in which content modules on the page can be repositioned, minimized, removed, and re-added to the page. The state of the modules persists in the background, so a reload of the page or a return to the page calls up the modules in their most recently positioned state. You see variations of this design pattern on many personlizable portals like My Yahoo, NetVibes, and iGoogle.

I don't know enough about the YUI package and JavaScript in general for this to be a recommendation, but thought that it might give you some ideas or tools to help with Panels 3

Great. Yep, although we're obviously not promising that ideas will go in just because they're suggested, we're definitely glad to have the suggestions - and so shortly after I made the request! Especially when they come with helpful links.

At this point, though, I plan to mostly stay out of the discussion and let other folks exchange and percolate through some thoughts.
