in some places around drupal, ,the submit is on the left, and preview on the right, and are completely reversed in others. can this be standardised please.
also, when the enter key is pressed, should the default action be to post, not preview. as enter is normally a substitute for pressing submit in most forms, why break it?

I agree. Looking around a bit, I found an issue for this: http://drupal.org/node/165567 . It's over a year old, so I guess what we need now are some patches... Here's a somewhat related issue about cancel buttons: http://drupal.org/node/116939. We should make sure that all these three are placed in a standardised order everywhere.

queuing up
Heya George2_
If you have specific issues like that, I think you should file them in the queue. We will all see them (as we check the queue), and it will also be seen by the developers. And that is where you want to be- where the 'actionable' items are.
Are you familiar with the queue? Searching can be difficult - I noticed if you start from the project (In this case, Drupal) http://drupal.org/project/issues/search/drupal - the component 'usability' appears.
Sometimes Google is your best friend. Most likely if we think of it, someone will have filed an issue already- but they may or may not have come up with your specific solution or suggestion. I also think it seems appropriate to give an issue a +1 to bump it, and show your support for it, even if you have no more to add.
Could someone else confirm this etiquette? I'd make a wiki page, but it has occurred to me I'm still unclear on the process...
Etiquette
More than a few +1's is considered inappropriate. In the issue queue.
I think we need to find a way to:
- discuss a usability issue here in this group
- reach a conclusion together
- add something like "the usability group thinks this deserves a +1" to an issue in the queue.
Point being that a +1 by the usability group carries a lot more weight than J. Random Developer.
Re: Etiquette
Depends on whose shoes you shine. Just because there are at present 443 members in this group doesn't mean that all members of that group will agree on an issue. However, I agree that +1 here is pointless. It is even pointless in the issue queue if there are no patches tested and reviewed.
Consensus
I didn't mean full agreement of all members, I meant general consensus.
I never said that a +1 is pointless. The point is that it may help decide whether creating a patch is worth the effort at all.
how about a nodequeue or
how about a nodequeue or similar at the top of the group page of top discussions that need to be discussed where a decision must be reached by x date (setting a date will encourage those who feel strongly about something to keep an eye on it and take active discussion).
a poll for end decision has its merits and downfalls. however, some visual clue needs to be given as to the general concensus. people may not have any comments on an idea, but they will think it's a good/bad idea (hopefully if bad, they should say why)
Not totally sure. How about a core usability maintainer?
The Knight Initiative group uses the fivestar module to allow rating to a particular content type. I'm not sure that's suitable for us though, as we're not evaluating single proposals (like they do), but aim for a fruitful discussion that leads to something we can take into the issue queue as patches or feedback.
A somewhat related idea is a core usability maintainer that has a final say on issues that impact usability somehow. A person like this should also be able to chime in on discussions to say whether it's likely to be accepted or not, which would be very helpful and probably save us a lot of time discussing the wrong things. I'm sure this has been brought up before..
ok thanks for the heads up
ok thanks for the heads up heather :)
Gah! Save on the left seems
Gah! Save on the left seems really awkward to me.. although I know usually in series the primary button will be on the left and others following, it should be highlighted though as some other color

Already in D6?
It's possible we missed some, but this should have been fixed here in Drupal 6: http://drupal.org/node/195678
Speaking to usability
I know captcha is needed but the one on this site is outrageous. Can't read the Java picture and audio doesn't work. AND, it isn't even present for entry until I hit the submit button.
Yea
It would help a lot to only have to enter one captcha per session. Or would that benefit spammers?
