Community Discussion/Chat Facility

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to host a meeting between a dozen or so members of my site next week.

At it's most basic, we want to be able to have an irc/skype type discussion, with everyone being able to make text-based contributions.

It seems like there's no stable way to do this through Drupal, with Chatroom being the most likely candidate but too unstable for important meetings (is it unfair of me to say that?). I'm looking into integrating flashchat but haven't gone down that route yet.

In an ideal world, something like Flashmeeting - even without the video - would be fantastic. The ad-hoc voting facilities would be great for our type of meeting. Unfortunately Flashmeeting doesn't seem to be open to all.

How useful would people find a module that could host online meetings effectively? And what solutions do you currently use now, even if outside Drupal?

For online communities to go beyond socialising, and into organising and activism, it seems that we need to be able to host online meetings effectively. We're looking to sponsor efforts in this area, it would be good to know what others think.

Cheers,

James

Dimdim is amazing. I don't know what number of people it supports per meeting but I've used it with a client before and it is a great way to meet.

Thanks a lot mate, I'm

Thanks a lot mate, I'm checking out dimdim now.

Just took a quick look at

Just took a quick look at DimDim site. up to 20 people in conf for free/ 100 people for $99 and they have an open source version if you want to run your own server. From what I saw it looks interesting. When I recover from my laptop's lobotomy I'll have to give it a try. Would be great for distance training.

Thanks for mentioning this.

And back to the original post that started thread. Something like this integrated into Drupal would be great !

check out www.ajaxim.com. you can set it up in a seperate directory. I tried the drupal version and ran out of patience and just did a seperate install. Easy to install and works okay. There is also userplane, but I am not sure you can do groups.

for IRC

If you need instant IRC you can try Mibbit.com (there's a Mibble Module for Drupal).

Thanks for all the input.

From what I can tell so far, dimdim really is the best current option for corporate-style meetings. You can present, share desktop, files etc. The emphasis is on presenting, what it doesn't do (and what none of the other free options do) is provide instant voting or other tools for non-hierarchical meetings.

If you look at the flashmeeting demo, you can get people in the meeting to vote.

Approaching this from the angle of any campaigning group, this is what I'd like:

  • queued participation (audio and text - video a bonus, but doesn't really add much)
  • proposal submission
  • voting framework (even a simple yes or no) to pass proposals

Perhaps this is asking a bit much of dimdim at the moment, but I'm sure there must be lots of organisations/societies/campaigns that would benefit from these types of functions.

Maybe I'm straying a bit from drupal here, but I feel it's relevant because drupal is the CMS of choice for campaigning groups.

Cheers,

James
