Here's a prebuilt virtualbox environment for development. Works on any platform. I think this is a great way to introduce people to developing Drupal with FOSS tools. if nothing else it provides a debugging environment plug-and-play.
What is it?
its a Virtualbox VDI image (which has a smaller footprint than VMware) using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.
The the image of course (like VMware) works on any platform, Windows, Mac, *nix. I think anything with a JAVA JRE stack.
The setup includes:
- LAMP - using xampp - for a cleaner / easier interface for noobs, and includes phpmyadmin
- Inkscape (great for web development if you hate photoshop/gimp - but like fireworks. similarly intuitive, but limited bitmap)
- Geany (great GTK based minimal IDE - but overhead of a notepad application)
- EclipsePHP 3.4
- Xdebug configured for remote debugging
- Firefox with Firebug, FirePHP, FireFTP
- Drupal 5, 6, HEAD virtual development environments
- Ubuntu 8.04 vanilla - minus openoffice, & evolution email - in order to make image smaller.
a copy is available from torrent download: drubuntu-ladrupal-v1.7z.4479567.TPB.torrent
- you'll need virtualbox, which is also open source. (pickup on the theme yet? ;-)
- Then setup the VDI as a hard drive.
- Login usr/pwd is: ladrupal
- There is a full readme on the desktop once you login.
- (um, ya, LADrupal rocks! ;-)

Drupal Development Virtualbox Demo Sessions
FWIW, I'm hoping to give a demonstration of this (or a similar setup) at DrupalCon DC 2009 and DrupalCampSD. If you're attending either, and interested in seeing, please vote for my session.

I´d love to try it out but...
I´ve been trying to download that torrent for like 2 weeks & every time I try, Mike, there´s never any seeders so it just sits there w/out progression. Once I have it fully d/l´ed I wouldn´t mind keeping it seeded, I just need to get it first. :)
