Bounty for og2list and mass mail improvements - Post Carbon Institute

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi Y'all

Not sure what new development is happening on OG2List, or mass mailer for 4.7. I am the technology manager for Post Carbon Institute (http://www.relocalize.net) , we are running an OG site and have got OG2List working, but want to improve OG2List in a number of ways, we are also planning on expanding the module. There are 3 developers in Vancouver on our team, but we need some help. I'd like to hear from anyone else doing mail integration on where their projects are at so far. If any one has time available, I have some budget to help with further development on these modules. I would like to be able to do what google groups is doing.

OG2List
Shortcomings of OG2List that are giving us a hard time at postcarbon are:

-only one site per og2list setup due to the database integration. We are running many separate sites, with different domains and mail domains so we want to have multisite processing, and the perl scripts that process the postfix messages are not flexible enough.

-no inline images or attachments in og2list messages. Am I missing something here? If og2list does any extra file handling for attachments or inline images, let me know.

-line feeds in plain html messages are truncated, could be my mail setup, but would like to fix that.

My intentions of adding to OG2List:
- change the underlying method of picking up mail. What was the design descision that led to MTA specific architechture. Would it be acceptable to create a POP account per list and check it periodically? I have had pretty good results with MailGust (though it seems their dev team evaporated) which seems to run ok, but of course isn't integrated with Drupal.

  • have attachments and images created as links to files for the site. We could create an area in the files directory for files from mail and create links to the files from the forum topics. I realize this might have some securtiy implications, but we should be able to check the files on the server side.

Mass Mailer
Mass Mailer never made it over the 4.7 hump, I have seen some misc patches for it, does anyone have working 4.7 code?

I'd like to improve mass mailer in the following ways:
- make it work with 4.7
- allow for list administration on phplist from the drupal layer. I haven't run the mass mailer module in the past so I am not sure what the state of things is.

Please share your thoughts on what you want to see in these modules, and any ideas, code or arcane knowledge you think might help.
We are willing to pay for developement, and are going to sponsor the continued growth of the module.
Forum mailing is one of the major blocks with drupal right now, lets get it cleared up and continue to make drupal evolve

Mailing list manager

Anonymous's picture

Have you looked at the Mailing List Manager module?

This looks like a pretty good fit as a backend for OG2List, since it can handle multiple list backends, and provides a standardized API for list management.

It also works with mime_mail module, to provide both html and nice text formatting for messages (with an option for user preference).
It is not under very active development right now, but works for 4.7, and already has an EZMLM backend complete.

OG List manager solves very particular problems

Amazon's picture

MLM module tries to integrate working MLMs with Drupal. This has particular limitations. We built OG list manager to solve 3 specific problems.

1) Mail is just content and should be stored in the Drupal database not a proprietary MLM flat file format. Drupal has hundreds of modules work working with content and MLMs leave content isolated.

2) Mailing List members should be the same as group members and they should be managed through the website. MLM don't store their membership in the database so you can't integrate organic group membership with MLM membership. Users want to manage their preferences on your website, not through a special web interface for mailing lists.

3) Website administrators want to empower their users to create mailing lists automatically, without requiring the administrator to do manual and advanced mail configuration. OG list manager uses Mail Transfer Agents capability to create mail boxes on the fly to create new Mailing Lists. Existing mailing list managers usually require the creation of new mailings list from the command line. This means that Drupal is required to execute command line instructions to dynamically create mailing lists, causing a major violation in security.

Hope this explains why we built OG list manager.
