Where'd content go, admin interface changes, and seperation between admin outside world

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I put this screencast together that outlines some possible resolutions to the problems identified usability testing. The screencast picks up some of the latest design work put forward by many of you (admin interface, input formats, revealing admin nodes, etc). In most cases I built on top of your work.

What do you think?

Thanks Jeff, a nice summary

Thanks Jeff, a nice summary of some possible solutions.

I'm not sure about having all the sections on the admin page collapsed by default - I'd like to at least see them expanded if the descriptions are hidden. Otherwise, every link requires an extra click.

Also, we can currently have 2 themes - I guess the suggestion here is to have a different admin theme by default? Another possibility would be to allow a single theme to have separate settings for the admin and non-admin sections. e.g. Garland could have different colors when in the admin section.

Finally - moving the action button to the bottom of the content list might be a nice step. I'm not sure that I was convinced that an extra link at the top of the page is the right step to the "disappearing content" problem. When not put the link in the message? Or make that item always expanded in the menu?

Thanks for the response peter

I made a change to the disappearing content problem, take a look.

um, in terms of usability

um, in terms of usability that page is not very usable. i still use a 1024/768 screen and that vid is way too big.

I know, my site itself needs mods...

But didn't want my site to stop my ability to give Drupal feedback. Any thoughts on the content?

i think that the cast that you did was great - very relevant. i would love to know how you changed your admin panel, is it a theme or did you create a set of modules? the drupal admin section does need a lot of work as at the moment it is just a scary lot of links. i have been using drupal for many moons now and the style of the admin panel is superfluous, but for new users, like me once, it is a little scary.

i am very glad that there are all of these usability tests going on now, i just think that they shouldve been started a long time ago.

The Preview button is nice

The Preview button is nice to have. I like the layout of the Admin pannel, but would definitely like them expanded to show all links.

I think there is a lot to like here. The organization seems to be better than the current one -- and would address various of the usability issues raised by the usability studies.

i would agree with dries.

i would agree with dries. perhaps the drupal 7 control panel could be redesigned.

Thanks Jeff, it's good to

David_Rothstein's picture

Thanks Jeff, it's good to see all this stuff in one place, since I haven't been keeping up with the Drupal 7 usability work anywhere near as much as I'd like to!

Everything looks really nice to me, but the one thing I found a little confusing was the "Preview" button, for two reasons. First, Drupal usually uses the word "preview" to mean something else (preview a piece of content before it's been saved to the database), and second because it wasn't clear from whose point of view you are previewing it (it was only clear after you clicked on it because the user login block was active, but if not then it still would have been unclear).

I would suggest something along the lines of "View this page as an anonymous user", maybe? (Which then also has the advantage that it is easy to extend to other user roles later on.)

First of all: great

First of all: great job!

Just a little thought on the preview button; I agree with David_Rothstein that the title 'Preview' is a little confusing. Especially while it's always present. I'd suggest to put it more in context of the node-edit form. Maybe it's even possible to open the preview (in non-admin view) after clicking the regular preview button?

Wonderful

I like the organization into smaller information chunks very much. You only see as much as you can grasp in one glance. Made som things bigger, some smaller - off you go!
Especially interesting is you didn't even had to reorganize everything completely - just put an order into it that makes more sense.

Is this completly funtional? Would be great to put this through some user testing. And even better if it coult be put into a module for everyone to check out.

It's not functional

Noyz's picture

It's completely smoke and mirrors. If it's well received, perhaps we could have some engineers at Acquia help push this along.

This would be great

eigentor's picture

If you coult push anything to a working state, this would be great. As experience shows, these things need quite some iterations and also something to touch. Everything that has real physical existence appears to be reviewed in a much more positive way than if it were "just" a concept.

If you need a hand with css and/or looks, contact me.
