Where are the DrupalCon sessions on taxonomy?

I've been reviewing the list of proposed sessions for DrupalCon DC, and I'm shocked, saddened and surprised to see (n)one about taxonomy! (There is one about taxonomy, but it's primarily about a contrib module.)

This state of affairs is unacceptable. There are some tremendous improvements to taxonomy module in core for Drupal 7 (thanks to Catch and Benjamin Melançon). With fields in core and the new database layer, Drupal's taxonomy features ache to be rediscovered by the community at large. It would be a shame to miss the opportunity to promote these improvements at Drupalcon.

We need to propose a session, but I cannot be responsible for an entire session especially when most of the work has been done by others. Catch suggested a panel format, so I want to solicit ideas from the group. Please comment here before Monday December 8, and I'll do my best to follow up with a coherent session proposal.

If others want to propose their own sessions about taxonomy, feel free! Given the number of sessions, I'd hope that if this group can agree on something, we can build support for it easily.

Does that sound fair?

  • what is taxonomy for anyway? (the basic concept)
  • hook_taxonomy_term_load in D7
  • UI solutions in contrib

Count me in on a panel

I'm hoping for some taxonomy-related wonder modules to report on, but should reality get in the way, I can help talk about taxonomy improvements in core (Catch is the powerhouse force behind them) and taxonomy's continued relevance to powerful Drupal sites in the era of CCK and Views.

The most important part of this session would I think be what you have labeled User Interface Solutions in Contrib, because hierarchical select, adding terms on the fly (I personally need to get up to speed here), and bulk taxonomy managing are critical improvements not yet on their way to core.

A final part of this session should be the future of taxonomy and what people can do to get involved.

Thanks.

I'll prepare a proposal that considers these points and post it on the Drupalcon site before the deadline. Then I'll come back here with the link. Thanks for the guidance!

I've submitted a session for the changes to node and taxonomy loading (which are about the same now) here: http://dc2009.drupalcon.org/session/new-node-and-taxonomy-apis-drupal-7 This is only a 30 minute development session, and only partly about taxonomy - would be really happy to do a panel about taxonomy more generally. (sorry I missed this discussion by the way, would've chimed in much earlier, and haven't seen bangpound in irc this week).

Session proposed. Please vote

I've posted the session proposal.

Please let me know if there's something I left out. I have listed catch, Benjamin and me as presenters. I am happy to bring more people up to the panel. Just let me know who you are and what you want to say!
