Drupal Gardens for Musicians?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Word on the tweet is there are some musician friendly features growing in Drupal Gardens. Considering modules such as Media and Media Gallery have been improved and/or contributed out of gardens, there could be points of overlap with developing Pushtape features.

This 'could' be a very good thing!?!

I was interested in developing something like this, a new MySpace killer perhaps?

lol

I think MySpace killed itself. So I wouldn't want to go that route. But I do dig the idea of this whole thing.

There's 2 streams here - one is 'features' for musicians to build their own websites, the other is aggregating consumers in a shared space. MySpace attracted musicians because of the former, but it also offered some benefits on the latter. Seems to me that dev efforts could be at the module level but could also be at the app level as well, collaborating on a shared platform running on a shared db, maybe hosted. Thoughts?

Another angle to this is how

Another angle to this is how to connect websites across servers on different domains, to create a peer-to-peer style social network. For music, privacy is usually not a concern so the network could be a bit more liberal with the information. One potential solution is something like Ostatus or a common "network" module that all sites install to connect to each other.

As far as overlap between Drupal Gardens and Pushtape, there will definitely be some overlap. Which will be very good for everyone, I think. The major difference is probably the target audience for each - most likely somebody seeking out Pushtape will want music features out of the box.

Drupal Gardens will be powering 200 major label sites...

Drupal Gardens will be powering 200 major label sites but no word yet on if/when musician friendly features will be available on Drupal Gardens itself and drupal.org. Seems like a good opportunity to collaborate on Pushtape and give modules like Audio, Discography, and Playlist some much needed upgrades.

Excited to see what we can integrate and improve

gusaus's picture

Thanks for chiming in, Chris! I think Pushtape could be a community testing/innovation ground that feeds back into Gardens and other distros/products. Would be great to know more about what features will be available on Gardens and when. Especially as development of Pushtape and add-on features is gaining momentum.

Exciting times!

Interesting

Pushtape looks interesting! In the near term our music partners have decided to embed a SoundCloud-based approach for album and track management (hence Drupal Gardens' support for oembed and soundcloud) , and phase 2 may look to something like pushtape for native support of albums and tracks. The kinds of things we believe would be important to got 100% native drupal are D7 media module, MRSS support, and integration with advanced track player of similar capabilities to soundcloud.
