Well, probably one of the biggest sources of information for this group is the page in the handbook:
HOWTO: Write an installation profile for the Drupal installer.
I'm not sure how recent that document really is, though. The most recent version is from June. I may have to try it out to find out the status.

CivicSpace
I think the document may be fairly out of date, in all. I know a lot of work went into getting the CivicSpace installer functionality ready for Drupal -- how different the end product is I really couldn't say. Fortunately, Dries just posted about this to the dev list and I am about to chime in, there, so I will find out and attempt to ask some useful questions, then.
