New Version of ELMS released

btopro's picture

ELMS Alpha 5 came out today! https://drupal.psu.edu/project/elms

ELMS is now entirely features based and following the best practices established by Open Atrium / Eduglu / Drupal Commons. You can download the distro at the link above or check out any of the 24 other modules/features contributed as part of this release at https://drupal.psu.edu/fserver

As always, any questions let me know and feedback is always appreciated but much of the functionality is compatible with Atrium or stock drupal sites. This is using Profiler to build it's install profile so it should be relatively easy to upgrade to Drupal 7 once the D7 versions of Spaces / Purl / OG mature a bit more.

A video walk through of (most) functionality can be found in this Drupal planet posting -- http://elearning.psu.edu/elearning/atriums-little-edu-based-brother-born

installation issue

Hi,

I tried installing alpha 5 and it seemed to get stuck at /install.php?profile=elms, at the Pressflow Install profile step - but I had selected Elms profile. I had ELMS alpha 4 installed on the same site, and it worked.

When I just went to the front page (remove the install.php... from the URL), I got the "white screen of death". The memory limit suggested to fix the wsod was 128meg; mine was 256 meg. I was running php 5.2.16.

I hope this is helpful feedback. Let me know if you want any more info.

Good to know. Yeah there's

Good to know. Yeah there's some oddities in PHP versions, having a lot of modules self install and memory issues. Atrium installs a large group of modules but does it in bunches, same with commons. I may need to evaluate this in the future but for now I'm using profiler install profiler builder. Memory differences will vary enve to env

Similar issue on the server

Yeah, I had some similar installation issues. Definitely a super sized installation. Probably correct about the need to do it in a few batches to avoid time outs.

Congrats...

By the way congrats on the great achievement progress, etc.

installation problems

hi i'm running 5.2.17 and i just get a 500 internal server error when attempting to install.
Any ideas?

Problem installing version 5 also

I get stuck at the same place with the same problem as snowmontain but I get array problems on top of this and the browser are none stop cycling. On one install I got to step 3 and the other no where. I once had succed with a previous version. What can I do ? Can I install version 4 and update it ? What are the main differences with the new version ? If version 4 is sufficient for my client's need I don't see a problem. He's a teacher involved in home schooling so I want him to get an elms installed.

Install issues

There are some known install issues that are documented in the README.txt file. If those recommendations don't help, here's a bit of a cheating solution that worked for me in getting elms installed on 1and1 -- http://drupal.org/node/1364624#comment-5415980 . The red_valkyrie person responding in that thread was able to get it installed on shared hosting using this technique.

@blancdememoire -- I have no upgrade path at the moment, hence the alphas since they've been rapidly changing shape (structurally and UX wise). The next version will start the betas and upgrades should be formally supported at that time. There's also a lot of talk in the community about feature alter hooks / modules as part of best practices so I've been monitoring how that plays out. Beta will be out prior to drupalcon denver. As for differences in versions it's all about refinement each version. A5 and onward are much more modular and better documented as well as start to add a lot more functionality (or groundwork for it at least).

I'd be interested to hear how your client is using it / how it can meet his needs as that's one of the underserved audiences I see benefitting the most from a platform like this. To keep up on changes and where things are heading goto https://drupal.psu.edu/

So, I should just add a

So, I should just add a php.ini file with the following directives to the directory:

allow_url_fopen = TRUE
memory_limit = 128M
post_max_size = 10M
upload_max_filesize = 10M

What is the mysql files you provided in that thread? Do I need that also?

Thanks.

That will definitely help.

That will definitely help. I've rebuilt the installer for the next version to (hopefully) avoid these issues. The mysql file in that thread is basically a way of cheating the install. If you setup a database and then import that file into it it's the same effect as if you installed elms manually. It only works on mysql (which is most users) and it's not the recommended way of installing (per drupal community) but it does work.

I'm trying to (maybe) get an Alpha 6 out next week as kind of a pre-beta though it'll be most of the way towards beta. Beta is planned for march.
