Interest in local mentored training?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi folks,

A couple weeks ago we put on a 60-student mentored training at the Bay Area Drupal Camp. jBrauer kindly assisted along with 5 other mentors. It went fantastic. I would like to gauge what the interest would be in doing something like this locally. You can learn more about the structure at http://buildamodule.com/train .

The basic idea is that instead of having lecture-based presentations, trainees watch videos at their own pace while experienced Drupal 'mentors' help them out when they run into trouble or have questions. Trainees can skip over stuff they know and focus on what they're interested in, while the mentors get to help people one-on-one the entire time. Like I said, it worked out great at BADCamp.

Anyway, I'd like to know if anyone is interested in participating in this, either as a mentor or a student. My guess is that we'd use a full day structure for the training.

Thanks!
Chris

I think that would be awesome. I would be more than willing to participate as a mentor.

Thanks, Andy!

Hi folks,So it's 4 months

Hi folks,

So it's 4 months later and I'm finally getting around to getting this set up. :) I spoke with a kind fellow named Alark from BSU about possibly getting a space set up (thank you Jeremy Zerr (edit) for connecting us up). It sounds like we'd get the best BSU student attendance in August after school starts up again, but Alark is willing to see if he can help us get a space set up for a Mentored Training in June. I think getting something going sooner would be good to help foster more Drupal activity in Boise.

I wanted to check again to see who would be interested in mentoring, and also to see what the mentors' availability would be like in June. Please post to this thread to let me know your interest and availability.

The training should be pretty fun. For those that don't know, we had 58 students and 12 trainers at the DrupalCon training in Denver and it was awesome. There's also been several other Mentored Trainings across the world since the original one at BADCamp, and they've all gone really well. I think this will be a great way to build some local Drupal talent.

Also let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!
Chris

I'd be willing to serve as a mentor given that final dates don't conflict with other engagements.

Sounds like a good time, and a good opportunity to promote Drupal in the area.

it sounds like fun, I am

Thanks for getting this together, lots of conversations at that develop.idaho event about needing to find some way to grow the CS program at BSU to be able to help fuel software companies looking for people locally. This is going to be a great step in that direction.

If this is going to be on the weekend or after school is out, I think we should try to connect with U of I students too. Even though U of I is far from Boise, maybe because its in June, many of those students will be back in Boise and might be able to attend. At the very least, would get the word out about Drupal having a presence in Idaho.

There was a guy that spoke at develop.idaho from U of I on the Engineering side of things, they have the same surprisingly high CS dropout problem that BSU has, seemed very receptive to trying to fix it, this might be a great opportunity for them, we should try and contact him, his name was Gregory Donohoe. His U of I page: http://www.uidaho.edu/engr/cs/faculty/GregDonohoe

My availability is good for June, other than baby 2.0 expected June 30. I'm totally in for mentoring.

Awesome, thank you everybody

Awesome, thank you everybody for stepping up! It sounds like Alark will let us know what Saturday(s) might be available in June next week, so I'll post back here when I know more.

I was in downtown Boise last night and realized that it might be good to reach out to local artist shops since most artists are trying to get their own sites off the ground, and some Drupal training might help them out.

Jeremy, let me know what I can do to help connect with U of I folks. I don't have any contacts up there, but think it's a great idea to reach out to them.

Thank you!
Chris
