It seems as though OpenID is at a tipping point in the Drupal community. While we have a lot of related modules, many seem to have gone into a dormant phase and aren't being actively maintained. At the same time, there's a resurgence of interest in OpenID from users of Drupal and a desire for robust implementations, particularly in the US federal government.
I'd like to suggest we, as Drupal-ists and OpenID users and maintainers of modules related to OpenID, plan to sit down for a bit at DrupalCon in March and take stock of where things stand with support for OpenID in Drupal and what the course forward should be. Anyone interested?

I'm not going to be at DrupalCon but I use OpenID as SSO. So I'd love to see more people using this / talking about it / etc.

Thanks for the interest, markwk. At least one other person I've talked to is interested but may not make the conference. He raised the idea of trying to set up a Skype conference call for remote participation. If this comes together, would that be something you'd be interested in?

Sure. I'm in China but live virtually across a wide range of time zones.

I was lately implementing the (Omniauth) SSO stuff and I would love to see more people in contributing to Drupal's OpenID modules. A BoF would be great, but I won't be in Denver for this Drupalcon :-( But I'd be very happy to jump in via Skype.
Cheers,
Felix

Thanks for the interest, Felix. If we end up pulling together a Skype, I'll post details back on the group.
As the current OpenID
As the current OpenID co-maintainer I'm interested as well. However I'm not going to Denver, but I can provide some ideas, feedback or might be I can attend virtually as markwk. The current status of OpenID is very unpleasant and I have to confess I'm bit frustrated with OpenID in Drupal since there are so many things done wrong. Currently I'm playing with an idea to reimplement the OpenID as contrib module and do it right... Since OpenID in D7 or D6 can't be really fixed without serious breaches of the API.
There is also an issue which wants to remove OpenID from Drupal Core in Drupal 8: Remove OpenID from core. And I have to say I support this. I don't want to be in the current situation again - when we all know that OpenID in Drupal has major flaws but only thing which we can do is to fix it in the Drupal 8. So we can use it in a year or two...
Since Drupal 8 adopts Symfony2 and PHP-standard autoloading we should consider also use of some existing libraries from Zend Framework, Symfony2 or similar and avoid reinventing the wheel again.
I'm glad to have you involved
I'm glad to have you involved in the discussion, wojtha.
The core implementation is certainly one of the challenges facing OpenID implementations, especially for those of us still running d6. More broadly though, I think there are a few areas of discussion that need to happen. First, how do we put together workable implementations now (in d6 or d7)? Second, what direction is the OpenID field heading (is Openid Connect the future)? And third, how do we build out the capabilities of Drupal to meet the directions the OpenID is headed?
Obviously each of those topics could take days of discussion, but my hope for this BoF idea is to at least bring together the people who are interested and able to carry things forward.
Move discussion to convention forum
I think it probably makes more sense to move this discussion to the forum dedicated to Denver DrupalCon. I've opened a thread in that forum at http://denver2012.drupal.org/content/openid-bof
