Tracking Public Crewing through Projects / OG

One of the things we've been looking at out here in Portland is effective crewing management and tracking through the Open Media Project. At PCM we follow a policy of "if you don't use it you loose it" where producers need to keep active (at least once a year) in order to keep their certifications up-to-date. We also follow a policy of needing to work on productions before you can start your own.

For most producers this is really important when it comes to studio certifications and one of the ways we use Facil is to track the crewing activity for productions. There's an example screenshot at the bottom of this post.

I've been thinking that PCM would need to customize the Organic Group module on which the project module is based in order to track producer activity within the project. Although at the moment we use crew tracking as simply an administrative function it could be used much more with this toolset:

  • People looking for crew could see what projects producers have been involved in previously to see if they would be interested in their project
  • People looking for crew could see a producer's credibility based on the shows they have been a part of and the amount of experience the
  • Staff could identify various skills that producers could use some updating on through a better tracking mechanism.
  • It would give producers more public recognition for their ongoing commitment to productions.

I wanted to see what OMP folk thought of this idea before we started to take this customization on. Would this be a helpful feature? Is there something that we're missing?

We have something like this,

We have something like this, but not exactly. Members can find volunteers for a project using the Find Volunteer link in their Member Tools...

http://www.denveropenmedia.org/find_volunteers
http://www.urbanapublictelevision.org/find_volunteers
http://pcmdev.pcmtv.org/find_volunteers (not configured yet)
http://dev.channelaustin.org/drupal/find_volunteers (not configured yet)

That page looks like this on DOM's site...

That page lists every member who's indicated they are interested in volunteering. In addition to that, we let users rank themselves...

Projects also have collaborators and credits areas. Users have a list of projects they are involved in on their Profile page...

We are definitely planning on building out the ability to search for volunteers with a specific skill set, but that hasn't been done yet. Obviously one of the advantages of building a network of similarly configured locations, producers looking for help in another community can find help as well.

Cool looking volunteer connections!

At PCM's non-development site we have a vastly under-utilized and much more ugly version of an online crew connect page: http://www.pcmtv.org/?q=producers/volunteerCall . Excited to start playing with your CrewConnect tool!

I hadn't been aware of the credits feature rollout before now - is this going to be pretty much what I was writing about in my original post? Could you elaborate on the Crew Tracking feature a little more?
