Em Space developed Mailout with the goal that it would take a different approach to email campaigns that Simplenews. The problem with simplenews for some of our clients was the newsletter/issue workflow.
After the learning that came out of developing Mailout, and after a review of Simplenews for Drupal 6. I've come to the conclusion that there is way too little difference between these modules.
In addition, perhaps in hindsight, the workflow that annoyed me in Simplenews could possibly be hidden by a small module to work with Simplenews. Further, I've found that the client's we targeted with Mailout tend to want to do big campaigns, often with big attachments, and with a big emphasis on visual presentation. It's all proved, well, kinda hard - for this type of use-case, we're opting for integration with MailChimp and CampaignMonitor, both of which have Drupal modules.
I'm also considering an upgrade path from Mailout to Simplenews. I can't guarantee that will happen overnight, but it is a realistic task.
So here's an opportunity for discussion. I've linked to this page from a few issues in the Mailout queue.
I'm looking for some good information from Mailout users who also have experience with Simplenews.

Hiiiii in my opinion...
This will be a great module... i've installed the 6.x dev version... and i don't have to do this working for me.. but i've been watching the user interface and this fit perfectly my needs... about the similarity with simplenews... i've installed so many times simplenews and i think that are some many diferences... i think that the Mail out concep is a much better aproximation to a simple, and easy to use email marketing system..
I'd love that this module work for me... in the top of all... the batch queue processing, that is a hard headache for my, because the limit in send emails per hour of my server...
Please don't leave this module, i'll put on it all my effort on testing any new release...

mailout vs simplenews
Just my twopennies worth:
I had an very urgent need to be able to send out emails to a all users of a role and couldn't fford to spent much time setting up, testing, etc. Looked a mailout, simplenew and a couple of others. i found most of them to complex to do the job at hand, except mailout: up and running in about 5 minutes.
So, please don' leave this module... Sometimes we need something simple that just works....
mailout far better than simplenews
I find mailout far better than simplenews - I feel the inferface is more friendly for end-users compared to simplenews. I used simplenews some 10 months ago and then tried mailout 6 months ago.

I find the options and setup of this module much simpler and smarter than the SimpleNews. It's a shame that it is not being continued.
Why give-up on such a needed and great module?!
