Drupal based music education site

Hi All,

I'm in the process of producing a web-based tutorial for music students to introduce them to computer music making. I'd be very interested to see your comments and suggestions for improvements regarding the content, presentation & whatever really.

The site is Drupal 5 using Asset for media, Lightbox, Quiz amongst others.

Please don't tell me to upgrade to Drupal 6 - it's in the pipeline but not till the next funding round.

thanks in advance

Marcus

So many ideas...

So many things you can do, and also so much work to cover all the ins and outs of computer music production.

As a musician/producer, I am an avid reader of http://www.computermusic.co.uk/ , and I find it to be the best magazine to get aspiring musicians interested in computer music.

I think you should go for a few basic sections at the minimum, such as

News
(Computer music news, business news from vendors, conventions, etc.)
Hardware
(Guides and reviews)
Software
(Guides and reviews, plus free downloads)
Music theory
Publishing/Distribution
(Talk about submitting works to online and other distributors, including lessons on understanding the finances)
Community
(Forums, showcase, collaboration)
Glossary
Free music
Free samples
Video tutorials
Podcasts

Another great site to get ideas from is http://www.soundonsound.com , which has very active forums.

Also take a look at http://emusician.com/ .

I would be happy to chat about the subject on IRC or VoIP or any platform.

Respecting your request, I will not tell you to upgrade to Drupal 6.X, but I am curious what keeps you from doing so... You mentioned something about funding...

i should have explained more about the purpose of the site

It is most definitely not supposed to be an all encompassing guide to computer music production.
Netmusic is a focussed program of study, mainly for teenage students in Italy and english speaking students eslewhere.

The kind of information overload you can get from putting computer music education into google is what we are trying to avoid. The students taking this course have limited access to PCs in many cases, let alone the music studio and they don't need to worry about publication and dsitribution for a while yet.

Allthough everything you have mentined is no doubt interesting it's not needed here.

However I will create a links & further reading page with selected links from the kind of stuff you are talking about.

Also the glossary is an interesting idea, especially with transaltions between English and Italian. When the students start browsing the web for info, most of it is in English and a glossary could help them. The best thing would be to link or include an existing glossary (I hate duplicated work and love feeds).

I have tried to isolate some specific techniques and concepts using Audacity to start them on the long road of discovery of how to make a tune on a computer.

The kind of feedback I'm looking for is from teachers who would consider using such a tool in their classes, and what features they think I should concentrate on.

Thanks a lot for your post, made me focus on the feedback Im looking for :)

BTW the next two learning paths are based on achieving quick and rewarding results in Reason 4.0 and Cubasis.

cheers

Marcus
