Which book to buy to get the most info about using Google Maps API together with Drupal?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Is such a book not been writen yet and if not have any of you plans on writing such?

I think we are many out there who have difficulties using the Modules for making maps.

I have made a lot of Google Maps API sites outside Drupal but have BIG problems understanding how to make it happen in Drupal. And the info I have found until now is quite confusing.

I have plans on making such a project like this http://www.opengreenmap.org/ but with official toilets from the hole World, starting with Denmark where I live and give the city councils the opportunity to make this info and update.

Maybe some of you would join me in this project, please?

Quick plug for myself :)

Hey, Tine. In March I recorded a video series for Lynda.com called "Drupal 6: Online Presentation of Data" that includes a couple of videos about GMap and the Location module. It should be out some time this summer.

The O'Reilly book "Using Drupal" might also cover the topic. I don't have a copy on hand here, but the book as a whole is excellent. :) (I don't see mention of maps in the table of contents... could anyone confirm or correct whether it's there?)

Good luck!

Not in Using Drupal :-(

Unfortunately the state of location and map modules at the time we wrote Using Drupal was pretty chaotic, so we dropped them from the book. Hopefully, if O'Reilly wants a second edition, they will get in next time, along with some other modules that weren't ready.

Hej Tom

Thanks for your answer. I have watched your great series Drupal Essential Training at http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=620 and are looking forward to the next you have made. You are a really good instructor and have a nice and good voice.

Maybe you could ask Lynda to let us see this two videos for free in this group? I know that she makes free videos for every series she make. :-)

And the next series could be as the subject mention and if YOU don't know enough about this subject maybe another person from this forum could make it?

Still no feedback from others about books explaining Google Maps API with Drupal. :-(

Free videos from Lynda.com

Hi, Tine -- thanks for writing back.

Lynda.com always gives access a few videos for free -- usually the first few. Unfortunately, the Google Maps section of the new course is at the end, so that part probably won't be available for free.

However, you can get free access for 24 hours by going to http://www.lynda.com/promo/freepass/Default.aspx?lpk35=530 . (For the moment, anyway: They might take away that link eventually.)

You're right that the GMap and Location modules are somewhat difficult to use at the moment. :( It's a bit too much to explain here, but in short:

  1. Install and configure both modules.
  2. Configure the "location" section for the content type you want to map.
  3. Create nodes of that content type.
  4. Go to [yourdomain.com]/map/node to see a map of all the nodes.
  5. To customize the map, install the Views module and create an appropriate view.

Good luck!
