What is Plings?

leontong.brightlemon's picture

Plings is a UK government backed initiative - Places to go , things to do - to encourage young people to get involved in local activities.

The purpose of the plings Drupal group is to show how Drupal can use the Plings API to showcase events in the UK in a variety of innovative ways...

Nice job in setting up the group brightlemon.

So where do we start?

To introduce myself...I'm employed by Substance (the folks behind the API) to spend some of my time on Plings and some of my time on other stuff they do. Much of that involves drupal sites.

There is a wiki for the Plings API at: http://www.plings.info/wiki

There are obvious applications for Drupal as a tool to gather information about places to go and things to do, and to publish it.

I'm also interested in the way Drupal is gearing up for the semantic web...

Cheers

Semantic Web and Tim Berners Lee

A year or so ago I went to a lecture in Cambridge by Tim Berners-Lee all about the semantic web - it is something he is very enthusiastic about. Is there are Drupal dicsussion/group on this already?

I will mention Plings at the next Drupal London gathering...

Are there any example sites/applications we can point people in the direction of for inspiration?

I see the Plings API and Drupal as a natural fit and alot of the time developers will be wanting to get thier teeth stuck into something worthwhile and a bit more challenging...

Yep, there's a group, and

Yep, there's a group, and here are a couple of other useful links:

http://groups.drupal.org/semantic-web

http://drupal.org/node/443824

http://buytaert.net/drupal-the-semantic-web-and-search

Looks as though there's some enthusiasm for having the building blocks for this technology in Drupal 7.
In the meantime, I've recently been experimenting with the Apache Solr module: http://drupal.org/project/apachesolr which is really cool.

However, for me at least, there's a bit of learning curve on all of that. Yet, in terms of gathering and publishing Plings data, I suspect Drupal already has all that we need. In my head, we could be looking at a 'custom distro' of drupal, that out of the box allows you to gather the correct fields, to display gathered data, and provide an interface to publish to the API (A kind of Plings in tool). Secondly there could be projects to display the aggregated data in clever ways...

Interesting stuff...

about PLINGS

angelina9 - Mon, 2009-08-03 03:19

This group is related to the PLINGS project, and aims to collect photos of Places to Go for young people across the UK. For each photo you can apply a unique PLINGS tag that will then connect the content to the data!

We invite people to contribute photos of these places, and any other image that might be relevant - roadsign, noticeboard, etc

This group is NOT about pictures of young people. Under no circumstances will this group contain images of activities or people - it is just about buildings, public spaces and such.
