Uses for this group

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

We're just getting ourselves organized, but I think we should probably try to come up with some guidelines for what we use this group for. Specifically I think we need to make sure that it is clear that this is not a support forum. We already have 2 support posts and that will just gets nuts. Out name makes it super confusing for newbies looking for help (which is a whole other discussion) so we should make it really clear in the group description that support posts will be removed, or we'll get way too cluttered to have a good space to focus. I also think we should state no job postings. There are other places for that, and I find them horribly annoying. Thoughts? Disagreements? Other things?

So...what will be the purpose

So...what will be the purpose of this group ?

Well, I'd say that this is

add1sun's picture

Well, I'd say that this is for:

  • coordinating the learn drupal project: a place to discuss things like roadmaps, plans, tasks
  • a forum for people who want to contribute to the learn drupal project (code and organization)
  • a forum for people who want to conduct sprints
  • posting events related to learn drupal sprints, and coordinating meetings

Um, stuff like that.

+1 for no jobs and moving support posts

dougvann's picture

I agree that no jobs should be posted here and that support posts should be relocated to a more suited group.
I would be happy to exercise my GDO moderator skills and clean up existing posts and police future posts. I believe a couple of us are GDO mods in here. So If you beat me to it that's fine as well.
Brock & Bryan... If you will agree to that measure then I will begin by relocating the [2 i think] support posts and sending the authors a contact submission stating where and why the post was moved. I've done similar actions in the past. I have found that by sending them a friendly well-worded message, we can keep the love flowing and also clean up the posts at the same time. :-)
I won't do anything until the group manager [Bryan] and admin [Brock] OK it.

Sure!

OK by me, but as noted in my other comment below, I don't really have any authority here.

I completely agree with Doug

I completely agree with Doug and Addison. I was so confused when I saw the support posts. This is a group that is open, but very important that we keep on topic to make sure this project is successful and grows. (My two cents FWIW.)

Agreed

BrockBoland's picture

Agreed pretty much across the board. Bryan added me as an admin after he and I talked about this very question: what should we do with this group and how? He only made me an admin so I could poke around and see what options were available to us, since neither of us had managed a g.d.o group before; it by no means confers me with any authority or knowledge ;-)

We did discuss the fact that there are five distinct things that this group will be used for:

  1. Organizing issue sprints
  2. Organizing learn sprints
  3. Writing lessons
  4. Working on, maintaining, and contributing to LearnDrupal.org
  5. Working on, maintaining, and contributing to Learn install profile

The hope was that we could somehow differentiate discussions and posts into these five silos, potentially with sub-tabs, but I haven't found a good way to do so. Perhaps it would be best to add a taxonomy, request that all nodes be tagged with one or more of these areas, and list links on the group home page to the taxonomy list pages.

Doug: as a g.d.o mod, do you have any ideas on how to address this?

(Also: yes, job posts should not be available, and support requests should be moved out of this group.)

@dougvann. Yes, please do

bryanhirsch's picture

@dougvann. Yes, please do follow up with the people who posted those support requests as you suggested. Thanks!

I'm new to group moderation. Is there a way to prevent job postings and/or support requests other than to state something about not wanting job postings and support requests on the group home page?

I started this group as a working group for people interested in helping get us to 1% of active users on drupal.org to contributing to Drupal core by 2014 by organizing "learn sprints" and "issue sprints" at Drupal User Group meetups, camps and conferences.

As BrockBoland said, I think there are really 5 distinct types of work going on right now to this end, and I'd really like to figure out how to make groups.drupal.org/learn-drupal help facilitate this work. These five work areas include:

  1. Organizing issue sprints
  2. Organizing learn sprints
  3. Writing lessons
  4. Working on, maintaining, and contributing to LearnDrupal.org
  5. Working on, maintaining, and contributing to Learn install profile

I thought we would be able to add some pages to this group with paths like, taxonomy/term/71099, but I just tried and apparently we can't. If anyone has suggestions for how to organize the group site better, please chime in.

2 support posts have been moved

dougvann's picture

I moved 2 support posts and reassigned them to the geographical group that each author stated as their place of origin.
I also sent them a nice note explaining the reasoning.

The clean up has begun!

Jobs?

BrockBoland's picture

So, a question then for the more-experience g.d.o admins: is it posible to disable Job nodes in this group?

sadly no

dougvann's picture

at this time there is no way to disable the job post function on a given group.
its under consideration though
