User group meeting
First Wednesday of the month => Bristol Drupal meet up.
I know some of you won't know until the last minute but please could you either signup to the event here or drop me a line if you will be coming. There was talk of relocating to a venue with a large space available, but I don't think we should bother unless we're sure we'll get the turn out of the last week.
Maybe we can make a better job of optimally re-arranging the tables this time? We are techies after all!

I plan to attend this time, Joe.
Do my best
I will do my best to attend, at least for a couple of pints.
Yea but no but.
I would like to regularly attend the Bristol meetups as they're my closest one, but I need my wife to be happy to cancel her regular Wednesday thing.
If the meetup is going to be in a pub again, I'm sorry but I won't be there. I can't really ask my wife to miss something of hers if I'm just going to the pub. :)
I certainly don't mean to criticise the organisation of this meetup, but unless it becomes something more structured with a good chance of gaining some knowledge, I'll need to bow out.
Cheers anyway.

it's certainly fair to draw attention to the fact this ends up being much more of a meetup than, say, a skill swap.
it has been the plan for some time to spin off some less regular additional learning oriented meet ups but this has yet to come about.
perhaps the fact than any 'planning' we try to do occurs in a pub is a factor ;o) I'll be sure to post details of anything else that does happen though.
perhaps we should start another rolling thread for people committing to talk on a given subject and schedule something once there is enough useful content on offer?
Awesome, thanks for
Awesome, thanks for understanding. It certainly wasn't meant as a slight on anyone doing the organising.
I'll keep my eyes open for any further developments.
Cheers.
Me too
I will be there for the first hour or so, interested in seeing what we do about spinning off some alternative skill exchange approaches.
Meetup format
The format I've seen a lot of tech meetups use is a pub meetup starting around 7pm (with a dedicated space in the pub), a 30-45 minute talk starting around 7:30, followed by questions/socialising/drinking until people decide to leave.
1 talk a night is usually enough, and a place the size of Bristol should easily be able to find 12 speakers a year.
PHPSW use the basement in the Golden Guinea (plenty of space, and a projector) and it's free (I think based on people buying food/drinks, but PHPSW seem to make it work)

I fielded the idea of the guinea after you mentioned it last time Marcus, didn't get a great response though. Although sometimes I guess we just press ahead regardless.
Also like the idea of shorter/fewer presentations. Not sure if it would be enough of an evolution of the format for people like shonk though (he's not the only one with thoughts like this). Maybe good to test the water with something half way though.
Let's see what kind of response the other thread gets. Thanks for replying to both :-D
+1
I really like the sound of this kind of format. I'd be up for a talk too, but I'll save that for the other thread :)
Sounds like it's going in the
Sounds like it's going in the right direction.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good excuse to get out for a pint, but one of the main reasons I come out to these meetups, besides meeting everyone, is to learn.
If there's a chance to give something back too, like a contrib project, then even better. I've a feeling that this is what instanceofjamie is heading towards at SWDUG.
Granted that I've only been to one Bristol meetup and tucked myself in a corner with manarth as he was putting some meat to a module for me, but there seemed to be a really good turn out. It would be a shame to put that to waste, so your idea of both an informal and a more structured could work well.
Thanks for the thoughts. I'll keep an eye out for developments.
Cheers.
I'll be there.
I'll be there. :)

Will be conducting a brief survey...
I am curious to get an feeling for the spread of ide's or file editors that are bineg used out there by Drupal developers, hope you guys don't mind if I ask everyone couple of quick questions about that.
I'm not going to be there
I'm not going to be there tonight, but it no-one else mentions it, have a look at PHPStorm. I switched to it from Eclipse PDT recently, and I absolutely love it.
PHPStorm++!
PHPStorm++!
IDE
It's eclipse PDT all the way for me.
Though, like everyone else here I'm sure.. I've been known to make pretty substantial code changes in Nano/Vi on live servers before.. if that counts ;)
Don't think I'll be able to
Don't think I'll be able to make it tonight...
Hope you can make some headway on a talk night/skillswap type event.
elephant it is
I don't think we're going to get the numbers we have the last few weeks. So let's go with the elephant for definite this month.
I'm pulling out
I can't see myself getting to this tonight now.. not looking at the workload in front of me still at 5:15...
a bit gutted to be honest.
Unfortunately...
Unfortunately, I am not able to make it this month. I've got a few things to sort out at home.
Will definitely (hopefully) make it to the next one!

June edition..??
Is there a June meet-up tomorrow night?
seems to have slipped the net so far.. :)
ummmmm...
If anyone just assumed it was on and is coming then I'll come for a bit. I imagine everyone will be heading home after the first day back at work though..?
I suppose through being the usual nagger this is my fault. I felt recently that we hit the right level of momentum for the meet-ups to just happen 'by themselves' but obviously not ;o)
