User group meeting

OK, so we are overdue for another meetup. To make up for this, we have two great community presentations lined up. Two people have so far volunteered to present so that this week we'll have Nesta's talk on how to do theme overrides in Drupal and next week Yannick (axle_foley00) has offered to present on multisites.

So this week Nesta will lead us through theme overrides with "Overriding HTML output in Drupal" (extremely useful stuff). Here's an outline of the talk:

Aim: Should be able to:
1. Locate overridable output
2. Override HTML using
* Functions - template.php
* Template files - *.tpl.php
3. Understanding rendering hierarchy

Intro:
* Structure of a Drupal theme
* Info files?
* template.php
* Theme registrty

Body:
* Finding themeable output
- theme functions (theme_)
- preprocess functions (template_preprocess_)
- theme file (.tpl.php)
- or just use the devel module's theme developer functionality
* Overriding theme or template preprocess function
* Overriding a theme file
* Converting from functions to templates
- getting the correct file name
- variables
* Forms?
* CSS Only themes?

Examples.
Tips.
Summary.

So overall the Agenda for the event is as follows:

  1. First 15 min to half hour: introductions
      * Who are you?
      * What brings you here?
      * What do you do?
      * How do you use Drupal?
      * What are your websites, what companies do you work for?
      * Generally catching up.

  2. Presentation: "Overriding HTML output in Drupal"
      * Use cases and examples
      * Q and A on the presentation

  3.    Group discussion
      * Anyone want to show off their multisite install?
      * Any projects or problems people have found and need help on?
      * Working on any interesting projects?
      * Want to share best practices when building Drupal sites?

So I hope to see you all on Saturday at UWI. 2pm sharp I will post further details of the venue later this week.

So we are confirmed for 2 PM at UWI. We got a room at SALISES (Sir Aurthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies). This is between Management Studies and the Faculty of Social Sciences, so across from TMRI on the Ring Road. The room is located upstairs, above the "doc centre". The guard, Richard should be letting people in.

You can call me (Nesta) at 313-3070 if you need directions once on campus. For people who can make sense of it, this map, http://bit.ly/18sKfo, should give a rough representation of the location.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

I'll definately be there.

Great presentation nesta

frazras's picture

I really enjoyed the presentation from Nesta, sorry it ended early, thanks Varun for recording the presentation. I hope this will be a continuous effort so the knowledge will get shared. I went to the NYC Drupal meetup last Wednesday and they happened to also be talking about themeing along with reports from the Design 4 Drupal (D4D) Boston session. Jacine - a developer presented a module she was working on "Skinr" http://drupal.org/project/skinr which allowed dynamic CSS modifications from the GUI using checkboxes. Something similar to how panels allows rounded edges or quicktabs allows themeing on the click - but for any component. She also showed a new themeing technique which is implemented in her "Sky" theme http://drupal.org/project/sky , this is based on the Studio theme which takes advantages of the capabilities of Drupal 6 and makes themeing neater and easier to do, placing preprocessors, modification and overrides in their own directory as includes. I have already tried making a subtheme from it and its really neat. Did you get last Saturday's presentation on multi sites recorded too?

second video coming

Hi frazras,

Its great to hear about your experience at the NYC meetup and to hear about whats happening there. Thanks for posting on this. You're right -great presentation Nesta. I did also catch last Saturday's presentation on multisites so I will be posting it as soon as possible. I'll post the link here probably at some point within the next day or two.

Varun,

Thanks for posting the video so quickly. I tried accessing it with and without my vimeo account but was unable to because of the privacy status. Perhaps, you can recheck and modify this. Thanks.

I'm looking forward to the next meeting and will definitely be on time!

Multisite video

OK,

So Vimeo finally processed the video, and here it is:

axle_foley00 on Drupal multisite installs, from last week's meetup:

@Scytalejm: try again, I believe the problem was that vimeo had not finished processing the video yet. It should be working now.

I can now view the video! Thanks! I appreciate the effort.
