We need volunteers to teach these topics!

If you would like to talk about any of the above topics at our next meetup on July 8th, leave a comment here. You don't have to be an expert on the subject, and for that matter, I invented all the topics for this poll in less than five minutes while making the poll so if you'd just like to talk about something similar, that'd be fine too.

Volunteer!

Noob dumb question

quindio's picture
quindio - Mon, 2009-07-06 21:45

1)
How do you go about creating the block on the right side like "Group Jobs" or "Group Events"
I know that you can create a block but mine do not have round corners.

2) Is there a recommended block text scroller. I did see a module textscroller but it took me to a site that
it had an Asian language and I dit no understand what it was saying.

That is for now.

BTW, I managed to create a front end scrolling page with pictures and text, but it took me 3 weeks because I finally found a link where a guy talk about an error on the code that had to be fixed. If I do not find that link
a code fix, I would still be battling with it.

The problems I do not like about Drupal is that it seems to be slow to load modules and sometimes you get
red errors and then if you browse 'Back' and reload not errors.

I do not like that inconsistency or is it just me!!

Thanks

It's best to speak to

It's best to speak to someone in person for in-depth answers. Come to the meeting Wednesday.
In the meantime:
1) Rounded corners are a theme feature. For non-designer types (CSS neophytes) you either have them or you don't.
2) A view with pager does it It gets a little deep for a noob, but my demo on Wed will have some Views stuff.

I was wondering since I am new....do you guys have a NOOB day or a mentor day to work on newbie issues or conversions from other CMS apps?

How we can help NOOBS

While I cannot over any of the subjects in the poll, I can address your NOOB concerns:
- At the yearly SANDcamp we have an entire track covering issues for noobs and intermediate Drupal users. Next camp is Jan 2010 (presumably).
- We will try and add a few items to the site demo and lightning talk sections of the monthly meeting which are more entry level. This is a conscious effort to retain the amazing number of new people we met last month.
- In addition, we encourage noobs to speak up and tell us their specific needs.
- Likewise, all you noobs, please get up and share your recent insights in lightning talks at the monthly meeting. You best learn from each other. More experienced Drupalers will throw in their bit to round out the picture, and if someone is completely off-base we'll gently correct. Don't ever be afraid!
- Finally, start a discussion here and see what happens.

Please ask your question in a lightning talk!

@SoCalCreations, Like Christoph said, this is a perfect opportunity to get help by standing up and asking a newbie question during one of our 5 minute lighting talks. You'll be amazed at the quick discussion that happens if you can present your dilemma in under two minutes, and after the meeting I'll bet there's at least three experienced Drupal people seeking you out for further discussion regarding your 'plight'! :)

Thanks for the feed back, I

Thanks for the feed back, I will send Christoph my question and use the forums...sadly I believe I will miss the next meeting as I will be out of town from the 12th - 18th. In the last almost 2 weeks I have learned ALOT and even converted my main site from SubDreamer to Drupal...still adding content as there is no real conversion program to speak of.

Results of the July poll

Senpai's picture
Senpai - Tue, 2009-07-07 18:22

We gotten some halfway decent responses to the Rules Module topic and the Creating A Test Site topic, but so far there's been no one to step forward and teach on either of these two topics. Bummer. I really would have liked to see a talk on Rules or Testing Sites. Maybe next month someone will volunteer to talk about something like that?

We did, however, receive two volunteers to teach us this month. Yay! In regards to Drupal's Caching System & API for the developers, and Using Imagecache, Imagefield, CCK, & Views To Create Without Coding http://thomas-art.com for the themers.

Granted, these topics didn't get as many votes as the other ones on the poll, but since there's only two volunteers this month and we have two presentation slots, guess who gets to talk?! :) Mike Shannon (bestrank) will do the Developer Secrets, and Christoph Weber (cweber) will do the Themer Secrets topics for July.
