In "Drupal Immersion", students will be guided through the process of creating a fully functional Drupal web site, exploring essential Drupal modules (like Views and Pathauto), learning important concepts (such as what nodes are, how to use taxonomy) and tweaking the look and feel of the site with CSS and other tools.

If you're not sure what Drupal is, Drupal is a powerful tool to build web sites. It's being used by large sites like The White House (http://whitehouse.gov) and The Grammys (http://www.grammy.com/) as well as smaller sites. A number of Boise-based company and non-profit web sites are being run on Drupal, and Drupal talent is in high demand. Skilled Drupal talent can charge anywhere from $50 to $175 an hour for freelancing work, and there are lots of great opportunities in virtual and physical companies accross the United States if you prefer to work on a team.

This particular training has been used across the world, from DrupalCon 2012 in Denver, to LA, San Francisco, Melbourne Australia and Edinburgh UK, and always gets a fantastic response. See below for some quotes from our students.

Unlike a traditional, lecture-based training, students will instead work at their own pace through a set of short, carefully produced training videos on BuildAModule covering the complete site-building process. By using video training instead of a live lecture model, students will be able to work at their own speed, pausing where they need to, replaying material they didn't get the first time around, and skipping material they're already familiar with. And instead of lecturing, the trainers will be free 100% of the time to help you through tricky spots or point you in the right direction.

If you've ever zoned out during a lecture and found yourself a little lost, or been frustrated that the short time available for questions gets taken up with discussion you're not interested in, this is the perfect environment for you. You can take breaks when you need, tackle exactly what you need to learn (or we'll help you figure out what that is) and get a lot of personal, expert advice along the way.

When you arrive, we will get you oriented to the course material and help you build a custom curriculum focused at your particular skill level, tackling the subjects you need to cover. All levels of experience with Drupal will come out of this training having made a huge step up the Drupal learning curve, guaranteed.

Students will get a free 8-day pass to BuildAModule so they can watch some videos before the training, as well as finish what they were working on once the training is over.

Lunch will be catered as part of the training.

Below are just a few quotes from students and mentors in previous Drupal Immersion trainings:

"Today's run-through was good for me in several ways. It got me on track to learn what I need to about PHP and some of the other components. Also, I am the sort of person who really likes to hear discussions among people who are more advanced in a subject that I am ...The conversations I was able to listen in on exposed me to facets of the subject I'd never imagined."

"It absolutely rocked! Lots of positive feedback. Some of the trainees were doing some amazing things by the end of the day, having started from scratch."

"We had a great time at the TCDrupal Build a Module training yesterday.  We had almost 40 attendees and they were *very* engaged.  Everyone came back ready to rock after lunch, and we even picked up a few people from the more advanced training.   Everyone was so engrossed that we had to drag them away from their laptops when it was time to go!"

learning drupal

thomasjw's picture

Chris,

As a database programmer/designer, I think I'll catch onto drupal quickly. My question is hosting and domain. I'd like to have a local host (like fiberpipe?).

Who do you recommend?

Thanks, james@thomas.net

Jim Thomas, Boise

Fiberpipe can host Drupal on

myoung008's picture

Fiberpipe can host Drupal on their shared hosting. Their systems are reliable and I've always been happy with them when I've used them in the past. However, I'm pretty sure there's no opcode cache for PHP so Drupal will run slowly and will be unacceptable for anything but a basic site.

You could also colocate a server there and have absolute control if you want to manage the hardware yourself. You should have Linux experience for this as PHP under Windows is really slow.

I personally use Rackspace Cloud Servers for all my Drupal hosting. It's not local though. With a VPS you can use APC or Xcache, etc. to improve the performance of Drupal dramatically. I've asked Fiberpipe about hosting VPSes (probably 6 months ago) and they were not ready to enter that market segment yet. He did say that I could host my own hardware there and create as many VPSes as I wanted...

I don't have any other local recommendations. I've worked with a few smaller ones but don't have sufficient experience with any to recommend them. In the valley, Fiberpipe is the cream of the crop.

Hi Jim, I'm excited to have

Hi Jim,

I'm excited to have you on board, the training should be fun and you'll learn a lot.

For the training, you can use a local Drupal environment so you don't necessarily have to worry about setting up remote hosting before then.

I don't have any hosting set up with local hosts, but have been using Site5 for a long time and really like them (http://www.site5.com/).

Thanks, and just post back here with any questions.

Cheers,
Chris

I'll toss in another vote for

cweagans's picture

I'll toss in another vote for Site5. They are amazing. I wouldn't try too hard to go with a local hosting company. I've been down that road, and I've found that, for the most part, local hosting companies are overpriced and aren't that good.

If you have a dedicated server, there are a few data centers around here that aren't too bad, but I wouldn't trust a local shared hosting provider, or even a VPS provider. There are just too many other services that do it better (Site5, Linode, etc.)

Site5 as well

Ogredude's picture

I'm pitching my hat in for Site5 as well. I've been with them since 2005, and I've always been fantastically happy with their service, support, performance, and pricing.

[Edit]
I contacted them today about APC. Not possible on shared hosting. Works great on VPS.
As for Aegir, that'll have to wait till they roll out their unmanaged VPS offerings.
