From now we have decided that mpeg-4 aka mp4 is the new standard video format for distributing screencasts.
Note! .mp4 being the file extension it selves and mpeg-4 being the name of the format/container.
Learn more about it here @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mp4
Mpeg-4 is widely used to distribute and promote video over networks like the iTunes wich we might use to promote drupal and the dojo screencasts. For specific tips on encoding screencasts, see mpare's documentation.
Here is a list of compatible media players(for windows, mac and Linux...even some handheld devices like ipod and PSP):
- Amarok
- foobar2000
- iTunes
- KSP Sound Player
- Media Player Classic
- MPlayer
- QuickTime Player
- RealPlayer
- The KMPlayer
- VLC media player
- Winamp
- Xine
- Nero Burning ROM(Nero ShowTime)
- PSP (Playstation Portable)
IMPORTANT! Making a screencast
The person who are hosting the lesson(the dojo master) should also be recording his screen(and sound) for best quality. But I guess it's nice if a person that attends on a live lessons does screencasting for the purpose of backup. He/her will as well learn how to produce a screencast ;)
Screenrecording software for various platforms
Whether you are on a mac, linux or windows there a freely available screen recording software.

Feel free to add how-to guides for various platforms and screen recording software.
Practical information(FAQ):
Will you need to edit the movies after the recording?
It's nice to edit out unnecessary content, like when you have a bathroom break. Or when you end up talking about joomla:) It's all about getting the movie as small as possible.
What about resolution?
Most important is that Dojo-students can see the text. Try to make sure the code that shows up at your screen gets recorded(record the whole text editor if possible). The IRC-chat is not really necessary to record. In stead, you the teacher can read up the questions loud and clear ;) The 1024X786 screen resolution worked perfect for Josh's 3. lesson.
Saynora! And good luck and have fun!
