channelAustin OpenMedia Project TO DO List
August 7, 2009

NOTE
This was written at the request of Denver Open Media staff in order for them to determine best course of action for Open Media Beta Site tune-ups.

GENERAL

The Denver Open Media / Civic Pixel Team (DOM/CP) Team was in Austin, at channelAustin, in March 2009. Since that time, the team has visited Amherst, Davis, Portland, and Boston and has pursued additional work at home base in Denver. In the intervening 5 months, the team has further developed core Open Media Project tools (modules) as well as the MERCI module.

During this exact same time period, beginning in March, channelAustin has undergone a $1 million upgrade of its facility, including a new building network and a complete overhaul of its studios and playback operations. That work is now essentially complete.

Given the rate of development and change in core Open Media tools and the MERCI module since March, and given the fact that channelAustin staff was very much pulled in the direction of studio and building upgrades, the staff here does not have a good overarching understanding of the current development status of the project.

Moreover, channelAustin has been waiting for a key piece of code to be written that is necessary for integrating the Open Media project tools with our Synergy server.

channelAustin therefore needs help from DOM in evaluating the existing implementation as compared to any and all new module features so as to make a determination of exactly what tasks need to be done to bring the implementation in line with the most recent module versions.
It would be helpful if we had some type of project management or project tracking tool so we could easily see the status of module development and know where we stand.

• Need help assessing evaluating existing implementation and generating task list
• Upgrades include modules and any other added features or changes
• Would like to developing better system for project management or tracking

RECENT WORK: CIVICRM

Since the ACM conference in Portland, channelAustin has focused its attention on migrating data from Facil to CiviCRM. This has involved setting up another Ubuntu server on the local network, installing an instance of Drupal and CiviCRM, acquiring DBConvert, using it to export the Facil data from a MS Access to MySQL format and experimenting with the Facil import scripts from raSANTIAGO. These scripts are working quite well. This is very promising.

• We do have questions for DOM regarding syncing CiviCRM and Drupal data.

OUTSIDE OM SCOPE: SYNERGY CODE

After a short hiatus, Rich Vasquez is back to work on the code needed in order to use the program scheduling features. He said he hopes to have something to demonstrate next week.

• We will need help from DOM to test and activate this functionality

SUN SERVER: REINSTALL UBUNTU

We have decided that we need to re-install Ubuntu on the Sun Server. There are several reasons for this. First, we realize that we have Ubuntu LTS 32-bit version, not the Ubuntu 64-bit version. So we want to correct that. There appear to be irregularities with our current Ubuntu install that a clean install will correct. Rich Vasquez will advise us on server security issues. Darrick Servis helped install postfix and we’ll ask if he can help make sure that works again.

• From DOM we need reminders on mounting the FFMPEG and DAU

IMMEDIATE NEEDS: TEST GROUP

channelAustin is very eager to begin using the Open Media tools starting with a test group of users and gradually expanding to the entire user population. Especially true now that the bulk of other work is finished in the building and that the Synergy code is on the horizon. We need to make sure the implementation is correct and that the server is mounted properly to the FFMEG server and to the DAU.

• Some of our staff could use guidance and help creating this process

CORE OPENMEDIA PROJECT TOOLS

As noted under GENERAL, we need help evaluating and determining upgrades. But if we can get a test group and up running soon then we can more clearly identify issues or needs. The main focus initially will be on Create Show.

• Related to test group, could use help making sure we’re on track with this

MERCI

Again, besides what’s noted in GENERAL, one area of concern is the sheer volume of our equipment inventory.

• Could use some guidance on process for adding our EQ data into MERCI

COURSE OF ACTION

In sum, channelAustin is most immediately focused on:

• Reinstalling Ubuntu on the Sun Server
• Getting the Synergy Code to work
• Pursuing the CiviCRM data import
• Ensuring that we are current on all modules and making sure that all OK for a test group
• Establishing a test pool of users

PCMs Task List

General Workflow and Site Issues
  • Drupal unable to handle files larger than 500MB.
  • Need Crew Connect working
  • Facil users need to be imported into Drupal - Need to know script locations
  • We have an issue with Media Mover not running with CRON. CRON runs fine, but doesn't fire MM at any point, must run MM configs manually.
  • A re-import of Civi data needs to be done
  • Scheduling
  • PCM is waiting for finalized development of scheduling module to be completed
  • We need to import lots of shows to have enough to schedule
  • PCM lacks an understanding of the "preshow"
  • Need a way to make a "preshow" a "show". This was discussed on our last call and was suggested that DOM will be adding a button to do this.
  • MERCI
  • Would like of view of "items that are reserved for today"
  • View of past reservations not checked in
  • View of reservations associated to a specific bucket type.
  • The grid
  • Theming Needs
  • "Search" block covers the user navigation block in any browser other than Safari
  • "My Skills" block in profile has extra white space above it
  • Misc
  • Volunteer and crew time tracking
  • DMA Task List

Davis Media Access' first goal is to migrate our existing data and user management tools into Drupal. Currently we are using phpScheduleIt for reservations and Egroupware for CRM. Plus way too much paper.

    CiviCRM: Define groups
Drupal (Module): Define CiviGroup Role Sync
Drupal (Module): Define CiviMember Role Sync
Drupal (Users): Define roles and permissions.
    LDAP Sync: Test create/delete/modify user.
Data Import: existing users/groups/contacts from Egroupware
    Import Donations
    Drupal (MERCI): Complete inventory entry
Drupal (MERCI): Define permissions for equipment access.

Our second goal is to synchronize our Cablecast server with Drupal. Managing duplication requests is presently a herculean task and we want to streamline that task by creating a simplified interface for users to order dubs. We also want to automate the ingest of video files encoded by our Cablecast server.

Drupal (OM Show): Migrate Cablecast show info.
Drupal (Airings): Sync with Cablecast schedule.
Drupal (Ubercart): Setup ubercart with OM Show content type for dub requests.
Cablecast Capture Sync: Sync captured files with OM Show nodes.

Regarding being on the same development snapshot. We recently went back and started from scratch with our web site. I noted the following:

OM Broadcast Sync was broken (required dependencies enabled first) I fixed it.
OM Show is broken (requires dependencies enabled first.) I copied the types from our old site.
Om Project is really broken (way too many dependencies. Hard to fix.) I copied the types from the old site. Still haven't got project_event in yet. Needed to set the php timeout to infinity because they take so long to import/export
TVFrame theme. Haven't installed it yet. Hacked around a bit on it and besides the css for the om_project page I haven't seen anything else this theme provides which isn't DOM specific. Save for the code which makes the flash video embed as opposed to show up as link (which I can't figure out what is doing that.) It would be good to split out just the theme code required for the om modules.
OM Support: my om_support module differed tremendously from the code in the CVS.
MERCI: Seems okay. I'm running the latest CVS. Haven't checked if the reservation_calendar view I had is in there (I imported it from the old site but it didn't work so I upgraded calendar and date modules and rebuilt it from scratch.)

    ACTV Task List

    synchlayer's picture

I’m hoping to have the new ACTV site up and running for the start of September at least for internal use of MERCI, and am currently training our staff and interns on this, so we can then add existing Projects & Shows before gradually involving our Members starting with our most active Producers in early September.

We then plan to use the Fall for testing, feedback and tweaking before revamping the theme and launching to a wider audience in a few months.

    IN PROGRESS
Adding the Amherst Specific content - porting the old website into this one

    Import Images

Tweaking roles and permissions – add interns
