theres probably a reason for it, but having user/%user as the my account and user profile page is too confusing.
I no there arent neccasarily specific guidelines for social networks, but drupal made sites are the only sites ive seen where user profile and user account are the same page.
generally a user profile page is a page what everybody on the site can access to view public details about the user. While the users account, holds more personal details, such as the users login details, settings, and access controls.
How am I supposed to attract more users to my site with such a confusing set up. For example having the edit my account tab i.e login email and password, located on the my profile page which everyone can see. new users to the site arent automatically gonna understand that not everyone sees there edit tab.
I find it overly confusing, and kind of amaturish that drupal hasnt set up two individual pages for my account and my profile.
Doesnt anybody else feel the same?

Not really
Drupal core isn't designed for social networking. People who build SN sites generally alter the profile page to look like a SN profile page. I'm never heard of anyone being confused by having the edit tab there, though, and have never had a user tell me they thought others would have access to edit it.
