Let's get Pathauto in core!

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

During each Drupal major version cycle, there is always an effort to identify major contrib functionality that could/should be added to Drupal Core, and Drupal 8 is no exception (can I just say: VIEWS - HOORAY!!!).

One of the most-used and most-downloaded contrib modules is Pathauto (http://drupal.org/project/pathauto), and there has been an effort several times to get it into Core.

With your help, this could become a reality -- but only if we act fast: there are several tasks that need to be taken care of before the upcoming Feature Freeze (which is scheduled to be December 1st -- see http://buytaert.net/updated-drupal-8-release-schedule).

The tasks are outlined on the Pathauto in Core issue.

What can you do to help?

You can sponsor development resources, work on patches, review them, etc. Here are the tasks that need to be done first:

Once that is all done, the automatic URL alias functionality can just be an alternative widget for the path alias field, which should not be difficult to create, and then the only remaining step will be to add a few sensible defaults to the standard install profile, and we'll be good to go!

So.... step up now!

Path in D7 core

couturier's picture

Well, we do have Path in D7 core that allows users to rename URLs. For a small site like mine, I'm functioning with that. I did use Pathauto in D6 because there was nothing in core then that allowed path renaming. I can see how Pathauto would be helpful to almost every user of Drupal beyond just the static sites that do not get new content regularly. Wish I could help, but I'm not a programmer. I feel the pressure for you. We have a programmer locally here who has been working hard for several months against the feature freeze, and we hear updates at the Drupal User Group meetings. He wishes it were maybe mid-January instead of now.

Its more about auto aliasing

Its more about auto aliasing all kinds of content automatically after setting smart patterns with tokens for better URLs/SEO than it is just letting the user set an alias with Path. That is the biggest benefit- and I believe it makes sense to be in core.

I disagree, I use pathauto a

I disagree, I use pathauto a lot, but I do not think it is needed in core. In core we should just have what is needed. Views is needed. Pathauto is not.

Pathauto Persist

I'd also suggest bundling Pathauto Persist (http://drupal.org/project/pathauto_persist) with that as well.

That would have been great!

That would have been great! When using VBO the pathauto info is really needed in the $node object!

Patch testing!

jhodgdon's picture

One of the components for PathAuto in core is the Token Browser. There is now a patch that could use your review/testing at:

(or check later comments if other patches have been updated). This will not get into core without reviews, so please help out!
