D6 External vs No Cache Varnish

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

A site I manage has recently started misbehaving, and I'm at a loss as to why. With the holiday, I'm looking for a stop gap measure. Basically, it appears that for whatever reason, when the cache expires, Drupal bypasses my panels overides, and dumps out the raw node in all it's unformatted glory. I've reverted the site to it's last known stable release. It's odd, because I'll clear the cache, and without clearing the varnish cache, the site fixes itself, so at least I have some to go on, but in the meantime, I'm trying anything, and everything to come up with a solution for Thanksgiving. I've disable Drupal cache altogether to see what happens. Varnish is still caching fine, so my question is, what's the difference between external cache and no cache? If nothing is updated for a few days, does it matter?

Thanks!
