SoC 2007 is on!
Google has just announced that Summer of Code 2007 is officially on! The timeline for the program is drastically different than either of the previous two years'... Students will know they're accepted on April 9, although the program doesn't formally start until May 28. The goal is to allow students plenty of time to integrate into their respective open source communities. Sounds like a really great change.
Here's a list of stuff we need to do in the next couple months:
- Done: We need to update the Drupal Google Summer of Code 2007 page with more info, and probably promote it to a front-page post.
- before March 12:Get the preliminary list of mentors finalized.
- by March 12: We need to put a mentoring application together. We can submit that as early as March 5, but no later than March 12.
- by March 14: We also need to flesh out the list of proposed projects some more.
- by April 8: Finish rating applications and get final list of mentors finalized.
- by April 9, but the sooner the better: We should also generate some documentation on how to get started in the community: mailing lists that should be subscribed to, how to get a CVS account, etc. Kind of a "Drupal development quickstart guide". Maybe the Drupal Dojo could help us out on this?
- by April 9 Prepare "welcome to the community" e-mail for accepted students.
Don't forget to check out http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/AdviceforMentors, which has some good tips on all of the above.

I took a stab at editing the SoC 2007 page

Additional edits are welcome.
I also talked with Josh K @ the Dojo. He's keen to help with a newbie developer guide, and also to perhaps do an "Intro to Drupal" session for the SoC students at the beginning. Awesome!! Here's an outline: http://groups.drupal.org/node/2805 -- feel free to edit that and add your own bits.
Nice timing
The application review period (March 24-April 9) is exactly when I have my pre-final exams, not that great. But there's also one advantage: when students can start coding (May 28) I'll have finished school and will have loads of spare time. Yay!
